2025 Sox Populi Top Prospect countdown: Nos. 71-75

Our Sox Populi staff combines their prospect lists each offseason, coming up with the Top 100 players in the system. We’ll be summarizing and counting them up here, five at a time, leading up to the regular season.

75
Phil Fox
Right-Handed Reliever
University of Pittsburgh
Baseball Cube Rating 84.00
Simple WAR 4.1
After a devastatingly good college season (4.1 WAR, as a reliever!) Fox sat out the rest of 2024 after getting drafted in the seventh round last summer. He made his pro debut just this spring, earning a Cactus League save with a clean ninth. His pedigree and draft slot could see him start high and move fast through the system.

74
Terrell Tatum
Center Fielder
Birmingham Barons
Baseball Cube Rating 55.00
Simple WAR 2.7
Just when Tatum got his feet back under him in 2023 and seemed plausibly on track for MLB work one day, he suffered a disastrous 2024. The only bright spot was a massive showing in Birmingham’s run to the Southern League title.

73
Calvin Harris
Catcher
Winston-Salem Dash
Baseball Cube Rating 52.50
Simple WAR -0.6
It’s pretty hard to have a season as bad as Harris’ in 2024. He provides value as a catcher but needs a massive bounce-back in every aspect of play.

72
Jacob Burke
Center Fielder
Birmingham Barons
Baseball Cube Rating 64.25
Simple WAR 1.1
Maybe it’s something about the water these Birmingham CFs were drinking, but like Tatum, Burke has a very poor 2024 after a very strong 2023 campaign. It’s a safe bet that at least one of these fleet feets will take a step forward in 2025, but that’s anyone’s guess.

71
Alec Makarewicz
First Baseman
Kannapolis Cannon Ballers
Baseball Cube Rating 66.63
Simple WAR 0.4
Back to the good stuff, Makarewicz was extremely productive in short-season play after going undrafted last summer. He provides both positional flexibility and some thump at the plate.
