Wyatt Johnston Hat Trick Powers Stars Past Blues
Last season, Wyatt Johnston scored a hat trick on his Dad’s birthday. On his mom’s birthday this year, she requested one gift… a hat trick.
Johnston delivered as he put three pucks in the back of the net three times in the Stars 6-3 win over the St. Louis Blues on Sunday night.
“It’s really cool to have a chance to do that and see the hats falling on the ice,” Johnston said. “I think confidence is a huge thing. As a power play, just the way it feels right now, everyone just kind of has that swagger. When we go out there, it feels like we’re going to score every time.”
Scoring every time is exactly what the Stars did last night as they went 4-4, including all three Johnston goals on the Power Play.
The one non Johnston power-play goal went to Mason Marchment, who gave Dallas a 1-0 lead at 1:56 in the first period with a sick snipe.
After the Blues tied things later in the frame, Matt Duchene buried a one-timer to make it 2-1 in favor of Dallas.
Dylan Holloway tied things again at 18:34 as the Stars gave up a power-play goal of their own on a bit of an unlucky shot through traffic.
Right at the buzzer of the third period, Johnston would get his first on a wrister to give the Stars a 3-2 lead.
Roope Hintz scored what would eventually be the game-winner early in the second off a night pass from Jason Robertson.
Johnston put things away at 9:14 as he was on the end of a tic-tack-toe play on the right side to make it 5-3.
At exactly 11:11, Johnston finished the hat trick in the high slot to deliver his mom’s birthday present.
can’t remember us being outshot like that in a long time, so credit to St. Louis. I thought they played heavy and hard and desperate, like we knew they were going to be,” Dallas coach Pete DeBoer said. “
You’ve got to find different ways to win, and tonight it was our special teams and our goalie were the difference. We don’t ask either of those things to win us games every night, so once in a while, you need that. We got that tonight, particularly the power play.”
