WWE Hall of Fame Spotlight: Lex Luger
Lex Luger will claim his rightful spot in the WWE Hall of Fame next month during WrestleMania weekend.
Luger had a two-year run in the World Wrestling Federation, but he was a major player in World Championship Wrestling.
He debuted in the NWA as an associate member of The Four Horsemen, feuding with Nikita Koloff over the United States championship.
Luger broke away from Ric Flair’s group and won the NWA World tag team title with Barry Windham. Unfortunately, Windham turned against him and joined the Horsemen himself.
CLIMBING SPACE MOUNTAIN
Luger tried many times to capture the World championship from Ric Flair, but something always went wrong.
The doctor stopped the match at Great American Bash 88. The Horsemen distracted him by attacking Sting at WrestleWar 90. The Horsemen invaded the steel cage at Capital Combat.
Flair finally left for the WWF in 1991, clearing Luger’s path to the World title. Luger won the vacant belt by defeating Windham in a steel cage at Great American Bash 91.
Luger held the championship for eight months before losing it to Sting at SuperBrawl 2. Then it was Luger’s turn to go to the WWF.
A NARCISSIST AND A PROUD AMERICAN
Luger debuted as “The Narcissist” at Royal Rumble 93. Posing in front the mirror, it was the role he was born to play.
But later that year, Luger suddenly transformed into a flag-waving American patriot. He challenged Yokozuna at SummerSlam 93 and WrestleMania X, but he was unable to win the WWF championship.
BACK TO WCW
Luger shocked the wrestling world by appearing on the debut episode of WCW Nitro in 1995. Everyone thought he was still in the WWF.
He teamed with Sting to win the WCW tag team title, as those two had an on-again, off-again relationship.
After Hulk Hogan turned against the fans in 1996, Luger was one of the heroes who tried to bring down Hogan and the new World order.
In August 1997, Luger defeated Hogan to win his second WCW World title. His title reign lasted six days.
Lex Luger overcame the crushing weight of high expectations to forge a successful career, earning a spot in the WWE Hall of Fame.
