Wings Sign McKenzie Forbes To Training Camp Deal

The Dallas Wings announced on Friday that they have signed guard/forward McKenzie Forbes to a training camp contract.

Just last year, Forbes was selected 28th overall in the WNBA Draft by the Los Angeles Sparks but was waived after training camp.

Following being waived, Forbes signed to play professionally in Australia and New Zealand. Most recently, she averaged 18.5 points, 5.4 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 1.1 steals over 13 games with Mainland Pouakai of New Zealand’s Tauihi Basketball Aotearoa.

Before being drafted last year, Forbes had one of the more interesting college careers. After spending her freshman season at Cal, Forbes sat out two years due to transfer rules and then COVID-19.

Eventually, Forbes transferred to Harvard, where she earned all Ivy League honors and averaged 13.7 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game in her senior season.

With one more year of eligibility, Forbes once again transferred, this time to USC, where she helped lead the Trojans to one of their best seasons in recent history.

Forbes scored 26 points in the Pac 12 championship game, leading USC to their first title in the conference tournament.

Overall, she averaged 14.3 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game while shooting .374 from three.

However, it wasn’t just on the court success that Forbes gained while in Los Angeles. She also gained a connection with now-Wings head coach Chris Koclanes, who was on the USC staff.

That wasn’t the only Wings connection Forbes gained, as now Dallas GM Curt Miller was the head coach of the Sparks at the time they drafted her.

Now, Forbes will compete for a spot on the Wings, who open training camp next month with some slots open in their guard/forward rotation.

Dallas will play two games this preseason, the first of which will be against the Las Vegas Aces on May 2nd on the campus of Notre Dame.

Then, the Wings will return home on May 10th to take on the Japanese Leagues Toyota Antalopes.

Both of those games will be a chance for Forbes to make a statement and try to crack the Opening Night roster for when Dallas opens their season on May 16th against the Lynx at the College Park Center.
