Why Did The Rangers Waive Dane Dunning?

Early on Sunday morning, the Texas Rangers parted ways with one of their longest-tenured players.

Texas reportedly place RHP Dane Dunning on outright waivers, giving any other team the ability to claim him.

However, any team who wants Dunning’s services will have just over 24 hours to make that known before the end of the 48-hour window.

If Dunning is claimed whichever team picks him up will be responsible for the more than two million he is owed.

Ultimately, the Rangers grew unhappy with the lack of results that Dunning put forth last season and in Spring Training ramping up for this season.

2024 saw Dunning be sent down to AAA Round Rock for the first time in his Rangers tenure. Dunning pitched just 95 innings in the rotation and bullpen with an ERA of 5.31.

In five Cactus League games this spring, the numbers were not much better as Dunning posted an 8.18 ERA in 11 innings.

In addition to the lack of results, the Rangers need extra 40-man spots for other bullpen arms to open 2025.

Texas could look for someone like Adrian Houser to fill Dunning’s role in the pen as a long relief guy.

A move like this also opens the door for a prospect like Marc Church or Gerson Garabito to find themselves as contributors to open the season.

If Dunning is in fact back with the Rangers, he will likely start the season with AAA Round Rock but certainly could impact the big club in 2025.

With Opening Day just days away, Texas still has many questions to answer on the pitching front now being down two starters.

In addition to the now rotation question marks, the first few weeks of the season will give us a chance to see how Bruce Bochy manages his mostly new bullpen.
