What Are The Rangers Getting In JT Chargois?

The Texas Rangers announced Wednesday morning that they had agreed to a minor league contract with RHP J.T Chargois.

Last season while splitting time with Miami and Seattle, Chargois threw 36.1 innings with an ERA of 2.23.

After being selected in the second round of the 2012 draft, Chargois has thrown for the Twins, Dodgers, and Rays in addition to the Marlins and Mariners.

With the Rangers bullpen makeover already seeing new arms like Holby Milner, Jacob Webb, Robert Garcia, and others, Chargois could be another name added to the list.

Let’s break down what exactly the Rangers are getting in Chargois and what his chances are to break camp with the team.

Chargois is primarily a two-pitch pitcher with a sinker which he uses 55% of the time and a slider which he throws 43% of the time. He does have a fastball but it’s used just 1% of the time.

Despite being an RHP, Chargois had reverse splits in 2024 as lefties hit just .130 off him in 54 at-bats. Righties hit just .221.

As for the Rangers bullpen, Chargois definitely has a shot to break camp with the team in late March.

Likely there will be one or two spots up for grabs in the Rangers pen and Chargois could definitely grab one of those.

Depending on if both Kumar Rocker and Jon Gray open the season on the big league team, another bullpen spot could open.

No matter which way you slice it up, Chargois won’t be coming into camp looking to get his work in.

With a good performance in Spring, Chargois could end up being a fixture of the Rangers Opening Day Bullpen.
