Bears Add O-Line, Vikings Question QB, Lions Plan Next Move

The NFC North is a battleground, and as the NFL offseason accelerates, the division’s teams are making waves—or stoking speculation. On this installment of “Who Will Be King,” hosts June, Pay, Foster, and Dave dissect the latest roster moves, NFL Combine performances, and looming free agency decisions. The Chicago Bears steal the spotlight with savvy trades, the Minnesota Vikings grapple with leadership questions, and the Detroit Lions play a patient game. With poetic flair and passionate analysis, this episode captures the pulse of a division poised for supremacy. Who will wear the crown? Let’s break it down.

Bears Build a Fortress: Offensive Line Upgrades Steal the Show

The Chicago Bears are wasting no time fortifying their roster, and Pay can barely contain his glee. After a season where their quarterback endured a brutal 68 sacks, the Bears’ front office addressed a glaring need with two seismic trades. First, they snagged guard Jonah Jackson from the Los Angeles Rams for a sixth-round pick. Then, in a coup, they acquired All-Pro guard Joe Thuney from the Kansas City Chiefs for a fourth-rounder.

Pay’s excitement is palpable:

“The Bears did the thing I’ve wanted them to do this offseason. I had my fingers crossed. I’m like, please just address, do what you’re supposed to do. You have the franchise at the quarterback position. You have to protect them. He got sacked 68 times this past season. Protect them. And let him develop naturally.”

Jackson, a former Pro Bowler with the Detroit Lions, brings pedigree and versatility. In 2021, he earned Pro Bowl honors, and in 2022, he allowed zero sacks across nearly 500 pass-block snaps. Even after an injury-marred 2024 with the Rams, he didn’t surrender a sack in 181 snaps. Thuney, meanwhile, is a four-time Pro Bowler and reigning All-Pro, graded fifth in the league by Pro Football Focus with an 82 pass-block score last season—no sacks, one penalty. For a Bears line that crumbled too often, these moves are a lifeline.

June highlights the ripple effect:

“It gives you a little bit more flexibility with your free agency and your draft. You can do more things instead of going directly to that need of the offensive line. Anytime you can get a starter for a fourth or a sixth-round pick, you’re doing good stuff.”

But Pay tempers the hype with caution, referencing past offseason mirages:

“Stay calm. We’ve been in this situation before. We’ve won the offseason before. We know how that goes. Let’s just stay calm, relax, take a deep breath.”

The Bears’ strategy hinges on health and depth—Jonah as a swing piece, Thuney at guard—but the proof will come on the field. For now, Chicago fans are dreaming of a Super Bowl run, and Pay’s grin says it all.

Vikings in Limbo: Darnold Drama and Leadership Questions

In Minnesota, the mood is less celebratory. Dave, the voice of Vikings fandom, paints a picture of frustration as the team watches rivals like the Bears make moves while they’re stuck in neutral. With just four draft picks and no trade ammo, the Vikings’ hands are tied, and speculation swirls around quarterback Sam Darnold and rookie JJ McCarthy.

Mike Florio’s report that the Vikings might re-sign Darnold and trade McCarthy has fans in a tizzy. Dave dismisses it as clickbait:

“Florio saying that the Vikings will sign Sam Darnold and then put JJ McCarthy up for trade—I think that is absolutely hogwash, just total BS. Florio being Florio to get clicks.”

Darnold’s late-season meltdown—likened by Dave to “Chernobyl”—in Week 18 against the Lions and the wildcard loss to the Rams has soured some on his return. Yet, head coach Kevin O’Connell (KOC) loves him, echoing past praise for Kirk Cousins. Dave speculates on the Vikings’ play:

“They may offer him, ‘Hey, you can come back, 15 million or 20 million, but there’s going to be a competition.’ Does Sam Darnold feel that’s worth it? I would say yes, he did [earn a starting job]. Most likely [with] the Las Vegas Raiders.”

Leadership ambiguity adds fuel to the fire. Florio claims the Vikings are “leaderless,” unsure if KOC or GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah is calling shots. Adofo-Mensah’s illness during the Combine didn’t help optics, though KOC stepped up. Dave shrugs it off:

“We’ll find out on that. Fans are upset on both counts—what Chicago has been doing to fix their stuff and now Mike Florio and the rest of the league talking about Sam Darnold when we have JJ McCarthy.”

Free agency looms as a test. Dave eyes interior linemen like Drew Dalman and Will Fries, plus safety Javon Holland, but with limited resources, Vikings fans brace for disappointment—or a surprise.

Lions Play the Long Game: Patience and Precision

Foster, representing Detroit, exudes calm amid the storm. The Lions haven’t made splashy trades, but GM Brad Holmes’ draft-first philosophy keeps them steady. Declining to franchise tag corner Carlton Davis was their biggest move—or non-move—yet.

Foster explains:

“Brad Holmes is never been one to really, he doesn’t seem to be a big fan of the trades. He said that just acquiring Za’Darius Smith was one of the toughest things he had to do. So I think he certainly is going to continue to hang his hat on what he can produce through the draft.”

Rumors swirl of a bold swing for Cleveland’s Myles Garrett, which Foster admits would be “worth the wait.” For now, he’s eyeing free agents like local product Paulson Adebo, a Saints corner with three picks in seven starts before a femur injury, and Giants edge rusher Azeez Ojulari, a sack specialist.

On re-signings, Foster prioritizes Davis and guard Graham Glasgow:

“I think Za’Darius and Carlton Davis are our two biggest priorities. The market’s going to be a little hotter for Carlton because he’s a little bit younger. Za’Darius is 35, so he may just decide to post up for another year with us on another short-term deal.”

June chimes in, urging action at corner or defensive end. With depth like rookie guard Christian Mahogany, the Lions can afford patience—but the clock’s ticking as free agency nears.

Combine Stars Shine: Draft Stock Soars

The NFL Combine lit up Indianapolis, and the hosts spotlighted prospects who could shape the NFC North. Pay raves about North Carolina running back Omarion Hampton:

“Running back, measuring at 221, ran a 4.46, had a 10’10” broad jump. Extremely athletic. You might want to start having a discussion if Ashton Jeanty is still the number one running back on the board.”

Pay fixates on linemen, praising LSU tackle Will Campbell:

“Will Campbell lit up Indianapolis like a Christmas tree. He had a good show—good interview, good bench, good everything all around. Now they’re saying he might be the first offensive lineman drafted.”

Foster highlights Arkansas edge rusher Landon Jackson (6’7”, 40-inch vert) and Kentucky corner Maxwell Hairston (4.28 40), while Dave mocks Texas CB Jahdae Barron to Minnesota at 24. The Combine’s ripple effects will echo into the draft—and the division’s future.

Free Agency Frenzy Looms: Who’s Next?

As legal tampering begins Monday, March 10, and free agency kicks off Wednesday, March 12, the hosts predict targets. Pay wants Bears center Drew Dalman and Colts tackle Will Fries. Dave echoes the linemen wish list, adding Miami safety Javon Holland. Foster eyes Adebo, Ojulari, and receiver Josh Palmer.

June sets the stage:

“Next Wednesday will be a show. It’ll be about 5 p.m. Eastern, and there will be some moves made. It will be some people signing the dotted line. It’s going to be a frenzy, and I think the NFC North will make a big splash.”–Vikings 1st & SKOL will be hosting.
