Unstoppable San Diego Padres Sweep Cleveland Guardians

An early-season trip to San Diego seemed like a fun time.

Then the Padres built on a four-game drubbing of the Atlanta Braves to beat the Cleveland Guardians three times in a row.

Wednesday afternoon’s game was a 5-2 win for the Padres, who have a club-record 7-0 record.

San Diego still isn’t in first place, as the Los Angeles Dodgers swept Atlanta in three games to improve to 8-0.

If you’re mathing at home, that means the highly touted Braves are off to an 0-7 start. Ronald Acuna Jr. can’t return quickly enough.

HEIST OF THE CENTURY

San Diego scored its first run on a double steal in the third inning. Luis Arraez swiped second and Fernando Tatis Jr. stole home.

Manny Machado reached on an infield single, but Cleveland third baseman Jose Ramirez committed a throwing error to score Arraez.

Jackson Merrill celebrated his nine-year, $135 million contract by hitting his second homer of the series to give San Diego a 4-0 lead.

Cleveland starter Ben Lively (0-1) took the loss.

ANY HELP ON OFFENSE?

The Guardians finally scored off Dylan Cease (1-0) in the seventh inning. Carlos Santana came home on a groundout by Lane Thomas.

The Padres got the run back in the bottom of the seventh on a solo homer by Arraez off Tim Herrin.

Cleveland picked up its other run in the eighth when Kyle Manzardo’s sacrifice fly scored Steven Kwan.

The Guardians have a much-needed day off before Friday’s visit to Anaheim to face the Los Angeles Angels. Gavin Williams will get the start at 9:38 p.m. Eastern.
