Timeless Comeback: Toni Storm Wins AEW Women’s Title at Grand Slam Australia
After faking amnesia and returning to her “Timeless” movie-star persona, Toni Storm has recaptured the AEW women’s championship.
Storm thrilled her fellow Australians by defeating Mariah May in the main event of last night’s Grand Slam event in Brisbane.
May had captured the championship after the “All About Eve” scenario in which the protegee (May) gradually replaces the mentor (Storm).
This setback seemed to caused Storm to abandon the “Timeless” gimmick and revert to her previous rock-star image. But she was just acting.
So, after five years of AEW’s existence, the most successful wrestlers have been Jon Moxley and Toni Storm with four World titles each.
HOT START
AEW tried to keep the NBA All-Star weekend audience by starting the show with Kenny Omega & Will Ospreay defeating Konosuke Takeshita & Kyle Fletcher.
After the match, the winners challenged the losers to matches at the Revolution pay-per-view on March 9.
Ospreay will face Fletcher, while Omega will challenge Takeshita for the International title.
But first, Takeshita will have to defend the belt against the winner of an upcoming match between Roderick Strong and Orange Cassidy.
PUPPET SHOW
Imagine getting attacked by a puppet version of yourself! That happened to Mercedes Mone in her TBS title defense against Australian favorite Harley Cameron.
Mone rebounded to win the match after hitting the Mone Maker.
The Australian fans also cheered for Buddy Matthews, but he lost to Continental champion Kazuchika Okada. Matthews kicked out of the Rainmaker lariat, but he couldn’t survive the second one.
“The Rated-R Superstar” Cope lost momentum in his quest for the AEW World title. Champion Jon Moxley teamed with Claudio Castagnoli to beat Cope and “Switchblade” Jay White in a Brisbane Brawl.
Moxley choked out Cope for the victory, so Cope must regroup before his title shot at Revolution.
