Tiger Woods commits to play in the Genesis Invitational

The golf season is in full swing, with the PGA Tour in Scottsdale, Arizona for the Waste Management Phoenix Open this weekend. However, the tournament coming up next weekend is one of the most notable tournaments, and that is because it is Tiger Woods’ tournament, the Genesis Invitational.

The Genesis has been in the news recently after it was forced to be moved from Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles to Torrey Pines due to the wild fires in Los Angeles area. However, since that decision was made the next question on everyone’s minds was, “Will Tiger be playing?”

Woods hasn’t played in a PGA Tour event this season, but made the announcement on social media Friday he will be playing in the Genesis Invitational next weekend.

Despite Woods not being an every week player anymore due to his health, the golf world still revolves around Tiger Woods. When he plays, there are more eyeballs on the tournament and how he is playing. And this offseason hasn’t been an easy one for arguably the greatest player of all-time.

In September Woods underwent a microdiscectomy which was believed to have been his sixth, and he did not play the Hero World Challenge, which he hosts, in December, explaining he wasn’t ready.

Woods has completed four rounds just twice since the 2021 single-car accident in which he suffered fractures to his right leg, plus trauma to his right ankle. Doctors inserted a rod, screws and pins to stabilize Woods’ leg. He played that way, but plantar fasciitis necessitated another operation in 2023, after which he missed another 10 months.

Tiger has played twice in the TGL this offseason, and has shown the ability to at least swing the club with regularity, but the death of his mother last week threw yet another wrench into his plans to play moving forward. Nonetheless, Woods will be in the field at Torrey Pines next weekend, a course he is extremely familiar with, and now the golf world awaits Woods return and how he plays.
