Thomas Harley Buzzer Beater Pulls Stars Past Devils

Game-winning buzzer-beaters in the final seconds don’t happen too often in the NHL, but it did on Tuesday night at the American Airlines Center.

With just five seconds remaining, Thomas Harley snapped a wrist shot home from the left circle to break a 3-3 tie and give the Stars a win.

It didn’t always look like things would take a last-second goal for the Stars to get the win. Dallas was up 3-1 with 12 minutes to go in the third.

Over a long season, you don’t want to be doing that every night, but we did some good things to build a 3-1 lead but then made a couple mistakes, and they grabbed some momentum in the third,” Dallas coach Pete DeBoer said. “Give them credit, they played hard and made us earn it.”

Following his hat trick on Sunday, Wyatt Johnston got the scoring started less than two minutes in as he buried a slapshot from the slot.

Ilya Lyubushkin picked up his first goal as a Dallas Star, finishing off a 2-1 with a wirster from the right circle.

Timo Meier cut the Stars’ lead in half with a power-play goal at 7:09 on a snap shot from the right circle.

During a 5 on 3 advantage, Roope Hintz finished a nice passing play to make it 3-1 Stars at 12:18 of the final frame.

After that, it was two straight New Jersey goals that tied things up at 3 and pushed the Stars to the brink.

However, a controversial icing call forced a faceoff back into the Devils’ zone and eventually led to the Harley game-winner.

“Up 3-1 in the third period, we should be locking it down better than that, but credit to the guys on this bench,” Harley said. “I thought Jason Robertson was going to pass to [Esa Lindell], but he gave it to me and [Granlund] made a great flash screen.”

Dallas will be back in action on Thursday night when they welcome the Calgary Flames to the American Airlines Center to close out the homestand.
