The Impact of the Magic’s Late-Starting Series with Atlanta

While the Orlando Magic have made it clear they are looking to the upcoming offseason to make roster changes, they still need to get in gear controlling what they can to improve their postseason prospects this season. Part of that is winning the series with their Southeast Divison-mate Atlanta Hawks.

While the Hawks are currently ahead of them in the Eastern Conference standings at the 8th seed after Monday night’s 112-106 loss at the KIA Center, it’s the first of the four games on the schedule facing them. If the race in the East is as close as last season’s, Orlando needs to hold a bit more weight on this series as a tiebreaker could come up in playoff seeding.

There are five other teams in the standings within four games of the Magic at the moment. Here are their current series records with Orlando.

Chicago Bulls

Currently, the Bulls are 10th in the East, holding the Philadelphia Sixers at bay (against whom the Magic are 3-1) for the final play-in playoff spot. The Bulls are 1-1 against the Magic including the game where Orlando franchise player Paolo Banchero suffered his right oblique injury that sidelined him for more than two months in late October. Orlando plays the Bulls again on March 6th at the KIA Center, to decide the series.

Miami Heat

Orlando has split 2-2 with the current Southeast Division-leading Heat. Tyler Herro hitting a big three-pointer at the buzzer to break the hearts of the Magic fans for a one-point win on December 26th kept Orlando from winning this one outright. Herro’s shot could prove to be quite the villain in the Magic’s ranking heading into the NBA Playoffs.

Detroit Pistons

While the Pistons have currently motored past the Magic in the standings and out of the play-in, Orlando is 2-1 against them head-to-head. The Magic secured this series on January 25th thanks to Magic star Franz Wagner putting up 25 points in the 4th quarter.

Milwaukee Bucks

With another game yet to play in Milwaukee on March 8th, the Bucks already lead the Magic 0-3. That March contest (assuming the Magic stay healthy) will be the first where Orlando would have both Banchero and Wagner on the active roster.

Indiana Pacers

The Magic have battled tough against the former team of Orlando’s starting center Goga Bitadze. Currently leading the series at 2-1 with help from a 50-point game from Banchero on October 28th, the Magic will have the opportunity to win the series on their penultimate game of the season on April 11th.

The Magic will face the Hawks on the road after the All-Star break on February 20th for the second game of that series. The final pair of games are in April including Orlando’s final game of the 2024-25 season on April 13th in the ATL,
