Cavs Hold Off Late Grizzlies Rally to Win 129-123

On Sunday February 23rd at 7 pm eastern time, the 46-10 Cleveland Cavaliers hosted the 37-19 Memphis Grizzlies at the Rocket Arena in downtown Cleveland Ohio. The Cavaliers last game was a 142-105 throttling of the New York Knicks at home last Friday. The Grizzlies last game was a 105-104 victory over the Orlando Magic on the road last Friday as well. Both Darius Garland (hip) and Jarrett Allen (finger) were listed as questionable for the game. Garland didn’t play, but Allen did play in the game. The Grizzlies were healthy and had no one listed on their pregame injury report. The Cavaliers came into this game riding a six-game win streak and were still trying to prove themselves amongst NBA experts and pundits. This game against the second seed of the Western Conference showed an opportunity to prove their critics wrong.

In the first quarter, the pace was fast, and the scoring was high to start the game. And after one quarter of play the Cavaliers led the Grizzlies 33-29.  In the second quarter, the game stayed close, and the Cavaliers pulled away enough to lead at halftime 62-56. The Cavaliers opened the second half by keeping up the pace with scoring and led after three quarters of play 93-88. In the fourth and final quarter, the Cavaliers held off a late Grizzlies rally to win the game 129-123. The Cavaliers are now a league’s best 47-10 and have won seven games in a row.

The Cavaliers’ leading scorer was Donovan Mitchell with 33 points in 35 minutes. Both Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen had double-doubles. Mobley had 25 points and 13 rebounds in 36 minutes of play.  Allen earned 13 points and 10 rebounds in 31 minutes.  Up next for the 47-10 Cleveland Cavaliers is a trip to Orlando Florida on Tuesday February 25th at 7:30 pm eastern time, at the Kia Center to play the 29-30 Orlando Magic. The Cavaliers will be trying to add to their NBA’s best record and to win their 8th game in a row. There are no guarantees in sports, but as a fan I am looking forward to watching this team as they continue to gel and develop for the postseason.
