Browns passing on QB at No. 2 would be a huge mistake

We are a week away from the NFL Draft being held in Green Bay, and the Cleveland Browns certainly sound like they are locked in on taking Travis Hunter, a wide receiver and cornerback from Colorado. The Browns General Manager, Andrew Berry, spoke very highly of Hunter at his recent press conference, comparing him to baseball player Shohei Ohtani, who plays both hitter and pitcher. Berry is obsessed with these press conferences to talk about getting “value” at the picks he makes. Don’t worry about winning Mr. Berry, and your team’s 3-14 previous season. Berry wants value and thinks that’s what they are getting with Hunter.

To be successful in the NFL, one has to win games, and if Cleveland really wanted to do that, they’d take a quarterback at their first pick in the draft at No. 2. The Browns will likely though continue to overthink every move in this draft and be no further to getting to a Super Bowl then they were decades ago. Berry and his coach, Kevin Stefanski, have been with this organization since 2020, and they are further from the goal of a Super Bowl than at any other point in their tenure. And that tenure could be in jeopardy if they don’t win now. But listening to Berry at his recent presser would make you think we were listening to a Super Bowl-contending GM rather than one who was part of a losing squad.

There is a disconnect with reality when it comes to the Browns organization. They don’t seem to understand that their team needs to win now, and there’s no better way to get that started than by finding a new quarterback. One can’t win in the NFL without a good quarterback. Browns fans have seen that first-hand for decades as their team ran through quarterbacks at an embarrassing rate.

Cleveland finally found one in Baker Mayfield, whom they drafted at No. 1 in the 2018 draft. And yet, they were willing to part ways with Mayfield after the 2021 season for controversial quarterback Deshaun Watson, whom the team traded away the farm for.

Now, the Browns have the opportunity to get another franchise quarterback in Shedeur Sanders of Colorado (Cam Ward of Miami will likely be drafted by the Tennessee Titans at No. 1). But Cleveland has overthought the pick again and sounds like they are set with taking Hunter.

Last season in the NFL of the 32 primary starting quarterbacks, eight of them were drafted beyond the first round. The chances of the Browns pulling a rabbit out of the hat and finding a successful quarterback from the second round or beyond are slim to none. We’ve seen this story before Browns fans, and it’s not aging well.

Cleveland has brought in veteran quarterback Joe Flacco and former Pittsburgh Steelers first-round quarterback pick Kenny Pickett to try and salvage a season that hasn’t even started. Flacco hasn’t started more than nine games in any season since 2017. While he had a nice run back in the latter stages of the Browns 2023 season, going 4-1 in his starts, the pick is only a bandage to try and keep the wound of Cleveland football protected short term.

If the Browns took the quarterback like Sanders at No.2 in the draft, at least they could say they made an attempt and are trying to make this team successful now. But instead, they want to say that the draft is more about “value” in the pick, and that can lead to success in the future. This organization certainly doesn’t seem like it understands how to succeed and do that with any type of consistency.

When the pick is in at No. 2, I certainly will cross my fingers that the Browns draft the quarterback (Sanders), but the reality of the situation and knowing what we already know about a dysfunctional organization, I’m prepared to hear them draft Hunter. Who was the last wide receiver who led their team to a Super Bowl? I’ll wait for your response…. still waiting! Go Browns!
