Coen and Udinski – Dynamic Duo in Duval

The Jacksonville Jaguars continued their march through the process of completing their coach staff hiring former Minnesota Vikings offense coordinator Grant Udinski.

The Jaguars new head coach and former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen said this of his newly acquired staffer. “Grant will bring a wealth of knowledge energy and a winning mindset to help lead our offense here in Jacksonville. . . He is a rising star in this league that has been a pillar of success for the Vikings organization and we can’t wait to have him lead our offense.”

If anyone had any doubts about Coen’s commitment to building around franchise quarterback Trevor Lawrence, Udinski’s arrival should dispel them.

While the Vikings fell one game short last year of winning the NFC North, they were tied with the NFC Champion Philadelphia Eagles at 14 wins in the regular season for the second-highest in the NFL. A big reason they got there was the revival of quarterback Sam Darnold. Drafted by the New York Jets initially in 2018, Darnold was left for NFL dead after struggled seasons there as well as with the Carolina Panthers and the San Francisco 49ers It was under Udinzki’s coaching in Darnold’s seventh season that the veteran passer posted a career year featuring over 4,300 yards passing for 35 touchdowns.

If Udinzki wanted an opportunity to work with a highly touted quarterback prospect like Lawrence while developing another great young receiver like Minnesota’s Justin Jefferson in Brian Thomas Jr with support from an offensive-minded head coach like the Vikings’ Kevin O’Connell — the Jags under Coen just might be the right environment.

It could also best opportunity that Lawrence has been offered to develop with guys like Udinski and Coen (who helped revitalize Baker Mayfield in Tampa). The biggest difference between Udinski’s and Coen’s former stops is their offensive line situations compared to Jacksonville’s. The challenge will be for the two of them to find common ground as the Jags continue to rebuild their offense heading into the NFL Draft.
