The Chiefs and Eagles Face Off in Super Bowl 2.0
Super Bowl LIX is coming up soon, and it is a matchup asked for by almost no one in America. The Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles are two teams that the country has fatigue from watching.
I know that fans in both cities are excited to see the rematch, but the rest of America probably doesn’t really care to tune in for the entire game.
Lets take a look back at the last time these two teams matched up in 2023.
Super Bowl LVII was held in Glendale, AZ on February 12, 2023, where the Chiefs narrowly defeated the Eagles 38-35, securing their second Super Bowl title in four years.
Game Storylines:
For the first time in Super Bowl history, there were two brothers facing off in the big game: Travis Kelce for the Chiefs, and Jason Kelce for the Eagles. Both of them being offensive players meant that they didn’t face each other on the field, but it was still dubbed “The Kelce Bowl” because of it.
Another story line was centered around Chiefs head coach Andy Reid facing off against his former team, the Eagles, where he was at the helm from 1999 to 2012 and took them to a Superbowl during his tenure there.
Patrick Mahomes was going for his second title in four seasons, while newcomer Jalen Hurts was looking for his first championship of his young career. Two talented offenses faced off in the big game.
The Eagles dominated the first half, taking a 24-14 lead into halftime. Hurts used both his legs and his arm to confuddle the Chiefs defense as he led his team to a 10-point halftime advantage.
The Chiefs, known for coming from behind, went to work in the second half. Despite nursing a previous ankle injury, Mahomes led a remarkable second-half comeback. He threw touchdown passes to Kadarius Toney and Skyy Moore, showcasing the next man up theology that the Chiefs and coach Reid went with.
As tends to happen in Kansas City games (according to social media and Instagram reels), there was a controversial holding penalty against the Eagles that extended the Chiefs’ drive, allowing them to kill the clock and attempt a game winning field goal to secure the victory against the Eagles.
Takeaways:
Super Bowl LVII was the Chiefs second championship, and began the dynasty talk among fans and media alike. They had won 2 Super Bowls in 4 years, competing in 3 during that span.
Since that time there has not been a Superbowl that Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs have not won, as they are going for history trying to win their third championship in a row.
All the controversy surrounding the calls that seem to go the Chiefs way along with the public’s perception of Mahomes “flopping” for calls during games (I have no commentary on this topic) makes this a prime game for the Chiefs to be the bad guys.
The problem is that most of the country also seems to harbor disdain for the Philadelphia Eagles franchise, as their fanbase is known for being loud and rude.
Super Bowl LIX will be watched, they always are, but my opinion is that it will not be as watched as some of the other games of recent years. It just doesn’t appear to be a rematch that most of the country is interested in or even wanted.
Will you be watching? It’s the Super Bowl, so I know with all my back and forth surrounding this game, I will tune in Sunday night. I just don’t know who I will be rooting for.
