Texans Sign Derek Stingley To Record Breaking Extension
Early Monday morning, a new man ascended into the record books as the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.
Derek Stingley Jr. and the Houston Texans agreed to a three-year $90 million deal with $89 million guaranteed.
As he gets set to enter his age 23 season, Stingley was eligible for the fifth-year option but the Texans chose to lock up their franchise corner, keeping him from the open market.
Just last week, Panthers star Jaycee Horn signed a four-year $100 million deal to give him a short reign as the league’s highest-paid cornerback in history.
Last season, Stingley enjoyed his best year yet in the NFL as he earned all-pro honors snagging five interceptions and 18 pass breakups while allowing the second-lowest completion among cornerbacks with at least 200 coverage snaps.
As a team, the Texans ranked first in the NFL, allowing the lowest completion percentage and second in interceptions.
Stingley has only gotten better each season since being drafted number three overall in the 2022 draft out of LSU.
The deal also comes as a win for Texans GM Nick Caserio as he extends one of his first-round picks for the first time since taking over in Houston.
Last year, WR Nico Collins signed a three-year $72.75 million deal marking the first time a Caserio draft pick was extended.
Caserio and the Texans’ front office have been busy this offseason on the defensive side of the ball.
Bringing in CJ Gardner Johnson from the Eagles amongst others, gives the already loaded Texans defense that much more firepower.
At the forefront of that unit will be Stingley, as the Texans hope he can continue to lead one of the best defensive units in the NFL at a high level.
