Still Too Early Rangers Roster Projection

The Texas Rangers pitchers and catchers will report to Suprise Arizona to kick off Spring Training in just six days

In 49 days, the Rangers will take on the Boston Red Sox on Opening Day at Globe Life Field to open the 2025 season.

With a full camp ahead, it’s still too early to talk about the roster that will take on Boston on March 27th but why not do it anyway?

Catchers (2) Jonah Heim, Kyle Higashioka – After bringing in Higashioka to aid Heim behind the plate, there won’t be much to watch for in Spring Training as far as which catchers make the team.

However, once things finally get underway a huge storyline will be how playing time is split between the two Rangers catchers.

1st Baseman (1) Jake Burger – After moving on from Nathaniel Lowe, the Rangers will turn to Burger to take over the first base position.

This offseason Burger has been working with Rangers coaches on his defense at first base and on the offensive side of things, he will provide some much-needed pop to the Texas lineup.

2nd Baseman (1) Marcus Semien – Much like pretty much the rest of the Rangers lineup, Marcus Semien is looking for a bounce-back season.

We know that Bruce Bochy would like to give Semien a few more days off but if the Rangers want to return to the postseason, Semien is a huge part of it.

Shortstop (1) Corey Seager – The Rangers wholeheartedly believe that Corey Seager can return to his MVP-level form after another solid season in 2024.

After having his second sports hernia surgery in as many offseasons, Seager is entering camp fully healthy and ready to go for 2025.

3rd baseman (1) Josh Jung – If anyone could use a fully healthy season in 2025 it would no doubt be Josh Jung.

After playing just 46 games in 2024, Jung’s presence in the lineup is key to a Rangers offensive bounceback.

Outfielders (4) Wyatt Langford, Evan Carter, Adolis Garcia, Leody Taveras – The four outfielders making the team won’t surprise anyone but their roles might.

Leody Taveras will seemingly take the “4th outfielder” role but Bruce Bochy believes there is another level he could reach.

With Evan Carter’s injury history and lack of MLB experience who knows how many games we will play in center field, that could open an opportunity for Taveras.

As for the corners, Wyatt Langford could take the step from ‘good” to “elite” in year two as many eyes will be interested to see what he can do in his sophomore season.

Garica will certainly have to be much better than he was in 2024 if the Rangers want to reach their full potential.

Designated Hitter (1) Joc Pederson – The Rangers had Joc Pederson on their radar for pretty much the whole offseason and they eventually made it happen.

Ideally, Pederson won’t play too much outfield, but he can if needed. The majority of Pederson’s at-bats will come from the DH and if he’s anything like he has been the last few years, the Rangers lineup is that much more dangerous.

Utility Players (2) Josh Smith, Ezequiel Duran – Rangers President Of Baseball Operations Chris Young says that Josh Smith’s best role in 2025 will be the super-utility role.

After winning a Silver Slugger in 2025, Smith won’t see his playing time diminish. Young believes the Rangers can get Smith in the lineup 4 or 5 times a week.

As for Duran, he’ll have to make the most out of what may be the very few opportunities he could get.

Starting Pitchers (5) Jacob deGrom, Nathan Eovaldi, Tyler Mahle, Cody Bradford, Kumar Rocker, – With deGrom and Eovaldi as the 1-2 punch, the Rangers have one of if not the best front-end rotations in all of baseball.

Mahle will look to have a bounce-back season in his first full year since undergoing Tommy John surgery in May of 2023.

After a strong injury-filled season in 2024, Bradford seems to have solidified himself as a starter in 2025.

Perhaps the biggest question coming into camp is who will earn the number five starter spot. If Rocker can show the flashes we saw at the end of last season, he could be an elite back-end starter. If Texas chooses the veteran option, the last spot will likely go to Jon Gray.

Relievers (8) Shawn Armstrong, Jacob Webb, Chris Martin, Robert Garcia, Holby Milner, Jon Gray, Dane Dunning, Jacob Latz – After the Rangers had to nearly completely revamp their bullpen in the offseason, Bruce Bochy will have a plethora of new options to choose from.

When you slice things up, there will likely be just one or two spots up for grabs in Spring Training.

Having not signed a closer, Texas will likely be looking at either Armstrong, Garcia, or Martin to close games in 2025.

Gray and Dunning will return to the bullpen, looking to find stability there and provide some desperately needed depth out there.

Notably, Josh Sborz will not be available to start the season, leading to an open spot for someone to grab.

Playing it safe, it could go to someone like Jacob Latz or Walter Pennington, but don’t be surprised if someone like Marc Church or Luis Curvelo grabs it.
