Should The Rangers Use A 6 Man Rotation? – What CY Said

When Rangers President Of Baseball Operations Chris Young and manager Bruce Bochy meet with the media to open Spring Training every year, one question always comes up.

“Will the Rangers consider using a six-man rotation?”

If you think about it, the idea makes some sense due to the injury history of the Rangers’ current starting staff.

Ace Jacob deGrom and front-end starter Tyler Mahle will enter their first full seasons back after Tommy John surgery.

Not to mention, other projected starters Nathan Eovaldi, Jon Gray, and Cody Bradford all spent significant time on the IL last season.

However, despite that, it doesn’t seem that Chris Young and the Rangers will be jumping the gun on a six-man rotation.

“We haven’t had that discussion” [six-man rotation] Young said.

“A six-man rotation helps the rotation and hurts the bullpen, it’s one less arm in the bullpen. I think it’s something we’re open to [but] more than likely having spot starters here and there, guys who either AAA getting spot starts or guys moving from the bullpen to spot start and maybe potentially shuffling guys through the bullpen and rotation depending on what the personal looks like but I’ll have to see how we come out of camp and where we are”.

Last season we saw Jack Leiter come up and make spot starts on multiple occasions and that could once again be the case this year.

If Kumar Rocker doesn’t make the Opening Day roster, you’d have to imagine that some of those starts would go to him as well.

As for the guys fluctuating from the bullpen to making starts, Dane Dunning is the first name that comes to mind.

Dunning struggled last season but has been bouncing back and forth from the bullpen to the rotation since the start of 2023.

Jon Gray is another guy who is in that conversation if the Rangers decide to go with Rocker as the fifth starter to open the season.

Ultimately, it sounds like the Rangers will be rolling with the typical starting five to open the 2025 season.

Since that’s the case, all eyes will be on Gray and Rocker to see who claims the final rotation spot.
