Should John Cena Break Ric Flair’s Record At Mania?
This past Saturday, ladies and germs…….we witnessed one of the greatest segments in wrestling history. There is no denying that. We witnessed a moment that was 20+ years in the making, that NO ONE thought would be possible. It was something that NO ONE thought WWE management would have the BALLS to pull off.
We saw…….John Cena turn heel!
SPEECHLESS. 💔

John Cena. “Captain America.” The man who we NEVER THOUGHT would turn to the dark side…….has finally made the jump. With one swift beat-down on Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes, the 16-time champion has thrown away everything that he’s believed in over the past two decades.
I……I am still in SHOCK over this moment. As a product of the ’90s/2000s, and someone who was brought up during the ‘John Cena Era’ of sorts……this moment just doesn’t feel “real” to me. It doesn’t feel like something that was supposed to happen in this man’s illustrious career, especially in his final year before retirement. The fact that he has apparently aligned himself with The Rock, as he makes his way towards a possible record-breaking 17th title win…….just doesn’t feel right.
If anything, this feels like one of those made-up story lines that they make you play through in the video games. You know what I’m talking about? They’re the ones that (you would think) would never happen in real life, but the company still wants you to experience them in some way, shape, or form. But the question is…..will this said “story line” lead to a real-life title win for John Cena?
It seems like that’s where we’re heading. I mean COME ON; the company needed to find a way to get John Cena into a championship match, in order for him to challenge for his record-setting 17th world title. They needed some kind of opportunity to bring him into the fold, so that it didn’t look like a weirdly-constructed “all good guys” main event. So because of that……why not shock the world, while still getting your match at the same time?
It only makes sense, doesn’t it? But if this is truly the path that they’re going down…..SHOULD they follow through with it? SHOULD the company use this opportunity to put the strap around Cena’s waist one last time, and cement him as the greatest champion in the history of professional wrestling? OR……should they have him LOSE, but use the momentum from this MONUMENTAL TURN to create one of the greatest (if not THE GREATEST) roads to a Wrestlemania in the history of the WWE?
Personally……I think it would be crazy-sauce to have John take the belt away from Cody Rhodes. It seems to “easy,” if you ask me. It seems likes one of those moves that we would EXPECT from a story like this. I mean, just think about it; Cena turns heel because he will do anything to beat Flair, he aligns himself with The Rock, and then he ends up winning as a “bad guy” to the delight of the fans?
That, my friends……that seems like it would be a waste of a build up, just to have him drop the belt soon after. Sure, it would be a fun sight to see. We would LOVE to see Cena go out as the bad guy, raising the belt on the grandest stage of them all. But in reality…..it just wouldn’t do much for the story, as a whole.
If anything, Triple H and the rest of the ‘higher ups’ in the company just NEED TO use the momentum from the Elimination Chamber to carry them through Wrestlemania, and into the summer. You just had one of the greatest twists in the history of wrestling happen this past Saturday. DON’T SQUANDER IT by catering to what the fans want to see. Give us ANOTHER SPIN, and let John lose in Vegas.
Obviously, I have no idea what’s going to happen. But in the end, as always…..what do I know? I’m just a guy from the Midwest, with a beer and a laptop, trying to make sense of this world.
