Veen Debuted and Doyle Homered but the Rockies Whiffed Again in Loss to Brewers

The Colorado Rockies were buzzing as they welcomed the Milwaukee Brewers to Coors Field on Tuesday to open up a three-game set. After an offensive outburst in a victory over the Athletics on Sunday behind the debut of No. 1 prospect Chase Dollander on the mound, the Rockies look to carry the momentum with the debut of another top prospect in outfielder Zac Veen.

Veen had shown a certain flare and energy that could be a helpful spark for a struggling Rockies offense but his presence wasn’t enough on Tuesday as the offense was missing in action in a 7-1 loss to the Brewers. The loss dropped the Rockies record to 2-8.

The was a battle of aces as the Rockies turned to their hometown ace Kyle Freeland to square off against the Brewers ace Freddy Peralta. It was business as usual for both batters as they navigated the first two innings with relative ease.ย The game remained scoreless until the third inning when the Brewers’ offense ignited. Isaac Collins, a former Rockies prospect, led off with a single, followed by Joey Ortiz’s single to center field, advancing Collins. Brice Turang’s groundout moved both runners into scoring position before young phenom Jackson Chourio delivered a two-run double to center field, putting Milwaukee ahead 2-0. Subsequent two-out singles by William Contreras, Rhys Hoskins and Sal Frelick extended the lead to 4-0. โ€‹

In the bottom of the third, the Rockies responded with Brenton Doyle’s solo home run, his second of the season, narrowing the gap to 4-1. Peralta then issued back-to-back walks to Ezequiel Tovar and Ryan McMahon. Despite this, the Rockies couldn’t capitalize further, with Peralta striking out Kris Bryant and getting Kyle Farmer to ground out.

Freeland settled back in nicely, navigating the Brewers lineup until they were able to add to their lead in the seventh. Turang launched a solo home run to center field to give the Brewers a 5-1 lead and chase Freeland out of the game after 100 pitches. Reliever Jimmy Herget then allowed back-to-back solo homers to Christian Yelich and Contreras, bringing the score to the eventual final of 7-1.

Freeland took the loss of the Rockies, dropping to 0-2 but he did pitch better than the line may suggest. He went 6.1 innings, yielding five runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and no walks. In his post-game interview Freeland admitted the fact that the Brewers kept jumping on fastballs and finding holes and weren’t allowing him to get to his secondary pitches. He also made franchise history with the most innings pitched to start a season without issuing a walk, overtaking David Hale in 2015.

On the Brewers’ side, Freddy Peralta secured the win, pitching five innings and allowing one run on three hits, with six strikeouts and three walks. The Brewers’ bullpen maintained the lead, effectively shutting down the Rockies’ offense for the remainder of the game. โ€‹

For Milwaukee, Chourio stood out, going 2-for-5 with a double, a triple, and two RBIs. Contreras and Turang each contributed with home runs, bolstering the Brewers’ offensive dominance. โ€‹

The Rockies’ offense struggled, managing only five hits. Doyle’s solo homer provided the lone run. Notably, Veen did record his first major league hit with a bunt single in the sixth inning, marking a small highlight in an otherwise subdued offensive performance.

Once again the Rockies struggled to put the ball in play, striking out a total of 14 times against four walks. Jacob Stallings wore the platinum sombrero with four strikeouts while Michael Toglia struck out three times. The team also went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

The Rockies will send out Antonio Senzatela to the mound against Tyler Alexander. Senzatela throws a lot of fastballs and will have to be careful as he has already given up 19 hits over his first two starts, despite miraculously not giving up any runs.
