Rox rally in the seventh, but fall short against the Nationals
The Colorado Rockies suffered a heartbreaking 12–11 loss to the Washington Nationals on Saturday afternoon at Coors Field, despite a furious late-game rally that nearly erased a 10-run deficit.
The Nationals’ offense erupted early, with Dylan Crews launching two home runs and driving in four runs. James Wood added a three-run homer in the fourth inning, and Josh Bell contributed a solo shot, helping Washington build a commanding 12–2 lead by the seventh inning.
Rockies starter Chase Dollander struggled, surrendering nine runs over five innings, including all four Nationals homers. In contrast, Nationals starter MacKenzie Gore was dominant, striking out 13 batters over six innings while allowing just two runs.
The Rockies mounted a dramatic comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning, sending 12 batters to the plate and scoring eight runs.
Mickey Moniak led off the inning, getting hit by a pitch and advancing to second on defensive indifference. A walk to Jordan Beck put two men on before Sean Bouchard laced a two-run triple down the left field. A pinch-hitter hit by a pitch, an umpire-assisted single by Ryan McMahon, an RBI-walk by Hunter Goodman and a sac fly by Michael Toglia score four runs for the Rockies.
With two the Nationals went to the bullpen for the second time in the inning. Jacob Stallings bounced a ball to shortstop that should have resulted in a double play to end the inning. However, Goodman hustled down to second and caught shortstop Nasim Nuñez off guard to beat his flip to the bag to load the bases and keep the inning alive.
Moniak then drew an RBI bases-loaded walk to drive in the fifth run of the inning and came around to score on the bases-clearing triple by birthday boy Jordan Beck. It the first time since that 2022 game against the Cardinals that the Rockies had scored 8-plus runs in a single inning.
In the ninth inning, Moniak’s RBI triple brought the Rockies within one run. However, Nationals closer Kyle Finnegan secured the final outs, earning his seventh save of the season and preserving the win for Washington.
The Rockies managed 11 runs on eight hits, but did strike out 17 times on the day with just six walks. However, the three triples and home run were a classic example of the hitting environment at Coors Field.
With this loss, the Rockies’ record falls to 3–16, extending their losing streak to seven games. The Nationals improve to 8–12. The two teams will continue their series with a doubleheader on Sunday.
