Rockies top prospects flood 2025 Spring Breakout roster
The Colorado Rockies 2025 Spring Breakout roster was announced Thursday morning, highlighting a premiere list of many of the team’s Top 30 prospects according to MLB Pipeline. In total, 24 of the Rockies’ Top 30 prospects will suit up for the exhibition against the Chicago White Sox prospects on March 16 at Camelback Ranch.
The Rockies roster will be headlined by two of the team’s top prospects, Chase Dollander (No. 1) and Charlie Condon (No. 2). Dollander has made waves among Colorado fans in his first big league camp with the Rockies as he lobbies for an Opening Day roster spot in the rotation. In five total innings, Dollander owns a 7.20 ERA over his two appearances as the long ball has hurt him. Still, he has displayed the makeup of a big league hitter while wracking up seven strikeouts against one walk. When the Rockies take on the White Sox, it’s expected Dollander will start the game once again as he did in 2024.
This will be the first time fans can get a good look at Condon, the 2024 third-overall pick. Condon didn’t exactly hit the ground running after he was drafted, as he struggled during his brief stint with the High-A Spokane Indians last summer. Last season, he slashed just .180/.248/.270 with one home run in 25 games after setting the single-season and career home run records for the Georgia Bulldogs. It was revealed during the offseason that Condon has also been playing with a thumb injury, which likely impacted his performance. He is healthy now and recently faced big league pitchers during an intra-squad game on one of the back fields at the Rockies Spring Training facilities.
Outfielder Robert Calaz (No. 4) is a name that has certainly garned plenty of attention during his rise through the Rockies system. Signed in 2023 as an international free agent, Calaz has quickly shown elite power potential and the ability to be a five-tool player. Last season, he won the Arizona Complex League Triple Crown, batting .349 with 10 home runs and 45 RBI in 49 games. He was then promoted to Low-A Fresno to finish the season where he continued to slash .327/.386/.571 with two home runs in just 13 games. He is only 19 but there is a bright future for Calaz as he continues to develop and refine his overall game.
Seven Spring Breakout position players are in Major League camp: outfielder Cole Carrigg (Rockies No. 3), second baseman Adael Amador (No. 7), catcher Drew Romo (No. 11), middle infielder Ryan Ritter (No. 13), outfielder Benny Montgomery (No. 15), outfielder Sterlin Thompson (No. 17) and third baseman Kyle Karros (No. 21).
Carrigg and Karros has rapidly raised their prospect stock over the last season. Playing critical roles for the Northwest League Champion Spokane Indians last season — where Karros was league MVP — both have dazzled in big league camp. Amador and Romo are the closest to the big leagues among the position player group, each making their debuts in 2024, but they still need some seasoning before the Rockies feel confident making them key pieces on the roster.
On the pitching side of things the Rockies have a lot more to celebrate than they have in the past. While Dollander is receiving the most attention, 2022 first round pick Gabriel Hughes (No. 16) deserves more attention in camp. The right-hander missed all of the 2024 campaign recovering from Tommy John surgery, making a few appearances in the Arizona Fall League. Fully healthy, Hughes has impressed in camp carrying a 0.00 ERA thorugh 6 1/3 innings with three strikeouts and three walks.
Brody Brecht (No. 5), a 2024 draft pick could be making his Rockies debut as he gears up for pitching in his first professional season. He spent the end of 2024 pitching in the instructional league and will likely start the season in High-A Spokane.
The Rockies roster features plenty of starting pitchers like Bradley Blalock (No.25), while carrying a few notable relievers such as Jaden Hill (No. 19) and Zach Agnos (No. 28). Nearly half the arms on the Spring Breakout roster have a chance at landing themselves a spot on the big league roster.
