Rockies threaten Dodgers lead, but can’t overcome Feltner’s command issues
Like a car stuck in the mud, the Colorado Rockies kept spinning their wheels on Tuesday night as they fell to the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-2 at Dodger Stadium. This defeat marked the second consecutive loss in the series and highlighted ongoing challenges for the Rockies in both pitching and offensive execution.
The Dodgers took an early lead in the second inning when Chris Taylor grounded into a double play with the bases loaded, allowing Michael Conforto to score and make it a 1-0 ball game. The game’s turning point came in the third inning when Rockies starter Ryan Feltner issued four walks in the inning, leading to a four-run surge by the Dodgers. Will Smith delivered the decisive blow with a three-run homer, giving Los Angeles a commanding 4-0 lead. Taylor contributed with RBI singles, further extending the Dodgers’ advantage.
Feltner’s control issues were evident, as he struggled to find the strike zone, allowing the Dodgers to capitalize on free passes. His inability to contain the Dodgers’ lineup set the tone for the remainder of the game. In total, he lasted just 2 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on five hits while issuing six walks against just one strikeout.
Despite the early deficit, the Rockies managed to break through in the fourth inning. Jacob Stallings drove in both of Colorado’s runs with a double, momentarily narrowing the gap to 4-2. However, the Rockies’ offense stalled thereafter, unable to mount a significant comeback against the Dodgers’ bullpen.
Los Angeles’ relievers were dominant, shutting down the Rockies over the final 4 2/3 innings, allowing only one hit and recording eight strikeouts. Rookie Jack Dreyer earned the win with 1 2/3 innings of relief, striking out four batters and showcasing poise beyond his years.
The victory improved the Dodgers’ record to 17-4 on Jackie Robinson Day since 2004, underscoring their consistent performance on this significant date. The win also highlighted the Dodgers’ recent dominance over the Rockies, boasting a 22-6 record against Colorado over the past three seasons.
Tommy Edman played a pivotal role in the Dodgers’ offense, collecting four hits. The Rockies, on the other hand, had 10 strikeouts but drew five walks, however, they mustered just five hits and went 1-for-10 with Runners in Scoring Position.
The Rockies, now 3-14, will aim to avoid a series sweep in the final game against the Dodgers (13-6) with German Marquez set to take the mound.
