Rockies Offense Left Out in the Cold in Home Opener Loss
In a challenging home opener on Friday, the Colorado Rockies hoped to find an offensive oasis from their struggles, but they were left out in the cold as they were defeated 6-3 by the Athletics in an 11-inning affair at Coors Field.
Snowflakes and low temperatures set the stage for the first game of the season at home for the Rockies. The game was marked by persistent snow flurries and a first-pitch temperature of 37 degrees, tying for the second-coldest home opener in Rockies history. Still, there are fewer things colder than the Rockies and their 1-6 start to the season.
Ryan Feltner toed the rubber for the Rockies and delivered a solid enough performance to continue a strong starting rotation trend for the club. Feltner worked 5+ innings, throwing 90 pitches, giving up three runs (two earned) on eight hits with four strikeouts and a walk.
The Athletics took an early lead in the first inning with an RBI single from Tyler Soderstrom to score JJ Bleday. The Rockies responded in the bottom half when Ezequiel Tovar blasted his first triple of the year and scored on Ryan McMahon’s sacrifice fly, tying the game at 1-1.
In the fourth inning, shortstop Jacob Wilson hit a solo home run, his second of the season, putting the Athletics ahead 2-1. The Rockies again answered back in the bottom of the inning with an RBI double from Kyle Farmer to drive in Michael Toglia, leveling the score at 2-2.
The Athletics once again regained the lead in the sixth inning thanks to an RBI double from Miguel Andujar, chasing Feltner from the game.
The Rockies tied it again in the eighth when after Farmer hit a ball that was initially ruled an inside-the-park home run. Farmer laced a ball to left field where the ball was then lodged at the bottom of the fence in left field. Farmer sprinted around the bases as the left fielder Andujar raised his hands to call for a ground-rule double. The A’s challenged the call and the home run was overturned, placing Farmer at second base. After Jacob Stallings struck out, Jordan Beck delivered an RBI single to tie the game 3-3.
The game remained tied until the 11th inning thanks to stellar defense from the Rockies and quality bullpen performance by the A’s. Unfortunately, things unraveled for the Rockiesin the 11th off of reliever Angel Chivilli. With two outs and runners on base, Jacob Wilson delivered a two-run single to right field, giving the A’s a 5-3 lead. They added another run on Gio Urshela’s RBI double before closing out the game with Mason Miller in the bottom of the 11th.
Strikeouts and untimely hitting were the bane of the Rockies in the game. They struggled with runners in scoring position, going 1-for-15 and leaving 13 runners stranded. Additionally, after scoring just three runs they have now scored a major league-low 14 runs through seven games. They also struck out 14 times and drew six walks.
The Rockies will look to bounce back in the next game of the series against the A’s on Saturday when German Marquez toes the rubber while JP Sears pitches for the A’s.
