Rockies dominated by Brewers 17-2

The Colorado Rockies endured a crushing 17-2 defeat at the hands of the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday night at Coors Field. This lopsided loss underscored the Rockies’ ongoing struggles and highlighted the Brewers’ offensive prowess.

Milwaukee’s lineup erupted for 17 runs, capitalizing on Colorado’s pitching woes. Jackson Chourio spearheaded the Brewers’ offense, delivering a home run, a double, and five RBIs.  Chourio’s three-run homer in the fifth inning was a pivotal moment, extending Milwaukee’s lead 8-2 and effectively putting the game out of reach.

Complementing Chourio’s efforts, William Contreras and Christian Yelich each homered for the second consecutive game. Additionally, Garrett Mitchell, Joey Ortiz, and Brice Turang each contributed two hits, underscoring the collective offensive effort. Tyler Alexander, making his second start of the season, allowed two runs over 3 2/3 innings, while Garrett Anderson secured the win with two innings of relief late in the game.

Colorado’s starting pitcher, Antonio Senzatela finally saw his luck run out after his previous two starts. He surrendered nine runs (eight earned) over 4 1/3 innings, causing his ERA to spike to 5.14. This marked a stark contrast to his earlier performances, where he had not allowed an earned run in his first two starts of the season despite coughing up 19 hits. He was stung for eight hits and the Brewers exploited Senzatela’s struggles, particularly in the third inning, where they broke the game open with five runs. They would tack on five more in the fifth against the Rockies, before rallying for seven runs in the ninth against Seth Halvorsen and Victor Vodnik.

The Rockies’ typically sturdy defense was missing as the team committed four errors, not exactly helping matters for the pitching. It was also a historic night for the Brewers as it was the first time in their franchise history that they managed to score 5+ runs in three separate innings.

Offensively, the Rockies had few bright spots. Ryan McMahon provided a moment of optimism with a solo home run in the third inning, his second of the season. Ezequiel Tovar and Kris Bryant each recorded two hits, but these individual efforts were insufficient to counteract Milwaukee’s overwhelming offensive display. The Rockies managed to score only two runs while striking out nine times with five walks, reflecting their inability to generate consistent offense throughout the game.

This defeat extended the Rockies’ losing streak and raised concerns about their pitching depth and overall performance. The team’s inability to contain opposing offenses has been a recurring issue, and the magnitude of this loss amplifies the urgency for adjustments. Manager Bud Black and his coaching staff will need to address these challenges promptly to prevent further setbacks for a young team trying to find its identity in a difficult division.

The Rockies’ 17-2 loss to the Brewers serves as a stark reminder of the challenges facing Colorado this season. Addressing pitching inconsistencies and finding ways to ignite the offense will be crucial for the team’s aspirations moving forward.

They will wrap up the homestand on Thursday with Ryan Feltner on the mound, making his third start of the year and facing new Brewers pitcher Quinn Priester.
