Rockies Bats Silenced in San Diego by Michael King
The Colorado Rockies concluded a challenging series against the San Diego Padres with a 6–0 loss on Sunday at Petco Park, marking their third consecutive shutout defeat in the series. This sweep is notably rare, as it’s the first time since 2017 that a team has been shut out in all games of a three-game series and the first time in Rockies history. They were held scoreless for 27 straight innings, amassing just nine hits and 12 total base runners with over 30 strikeouts.
Padres pitcher Michael King delivered an outstanding performance, pitching a complete game with eight strikeouts, allowing only two hits and one walk. He retired the first 13 batters he faced and maintained control throughout the game. Michael Toglia got the Rockies’ first hit with a single in the fifth and Ezequiel Tovar laced a single into left field back in the ninth inning.
Offensively, the Padres took an early lead with a four-run first inning against Rockies starter Kyle Freeland. With two outs, it looked likely Freeland could get out of the inning unscathed after two batters reached. However, RBI knocks from Oscar Gonzalez, Yuli Gurriel, and a two-run double by Jose Iglesias quickly made it a 4-0 Padres lead after the first inning. Iglesias had a standout game, reaching base four times with two hits and two walks.
In total, Freeland managed to go five innings, allowing five runs on eight hits and allowing his first two walks of the season alongside two strikeouts. Jake Bird gave up a run in his 1 1/3 inning of relief, allowing three walks. Angel Chivilli tossed a scoreless 2/3 of an inning and Victor Vodnik also walk one in his scoreless inning of work.
Not much can be said of the Rockies offense who has continued to struggle this season. Their record now stands at 3–12, the worst in the majors and they place in the lower ranks among most offensive categories including being last in total runs scored this season.
The Padres, on the other hand, have improved to 13–3, tying their best start in franchise history, and remain undefeated at home.
The Rockies will look to rebound as they head to Los Angeles to face the Dodgers, with Antonio Senzatela scheduled to start on Monday night as they try to avoid setting a new record of 30 straight scoreless innings.
