Freeland dazzles, but the offense is still missing for the Rockies

The troubling offensive trends for the Colorado Rockies continue to plague the team after another ugly output at the plate to spoil a gutsy outing from starter Kyle Freeland.

The Rockies fell to the Philadelphia Phillies 5-1 on Wednesday night at Citizens Bank Park, marking their third consecutive loss. They have now gone 1-4 on the road trip to start the year. Zack Wheeler toed the rubber for the Phillies and baffled the Rockies by delivering an exceptional performance, striking out 10 over seven innings while allowing just one run on three hits and no walks.

The Phillies’ offense was led by Edmundo Sosa and Trea Turner, each recording three hits. Sosa contributed two RBIs and extended his streak to four consecutive multi-hit games. Kyle Schwarber added an RBI double and scored on a groundout by J.T. Realmuto.

For the Rockies, Hunter Goodman provided the sole offensive highlight with a solo home run in the seventh inning, his second consecutive game with a homer. Freeland pitched 6 2/3 innings, surrendering three runs on nine hits without issuing a walk. He notably escaped a bases-loaded, no-out situation in the fifth by striking out Bryce Harper, Alec Bohm, and Schwarber in succession.

The Rockies offense has been scuffling quite a bit to begin the year. They struck out another 14 times on Wednesday while drawing just two walks. They have punched out 27 times in the series with just six walks. Key figures like Kris Bryant, Ezequiel Tovar, Ryan McMahon, and Michael Toglia have been scuffling at the plate which has made it difficult for the club to generate any sort of momentum. Bryant did finally get his first hit on a broken-bat single but the offense has a whole tallied just four hits in the game. They have scored more than two runs just once thus far this season.

The Phillies added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings, with Sosa’s two-run double in the eighth sealing the victory. The Rockies will aim to avoid a series sweep in the final game on Thursday.
