Doyle’s Big Day Propels Rockies to Victory Finale Against Brewers
After a rather forgettable loss on Wednesday night, the Colorado Rockies rebounded on Thursday to secure a 7-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers in the series finale, providing a much-needed morale boost for the team as they finish their first homestand of the season.
The game commenced with the Rockies taking an early lead in the bottom of the first inning when center fielder Brenton Doyle launched a solo home run to left field, marking his third homer of the season and putting Colorado ahead 1-0. Doyle enjoyed a strong homestand, hitting all three of his home runs in those six games, including two in his first at-bat.

Ryan Feltner started on the mound for the Rockies and delivered a strong performance, effectively containing the Brewers’ offense through the initial innings. The Brewers managed to tie the game up in the fourth after Christian Yelich and William Contreras hit back-to-back doubles to make it a 1-1 game. Feltner worked himself into a jam, issuing back-to-back walks to load the bases with no outs. He then managed to force Joey Ortiz to line out to third before striking out Oliver Dunn and Eric Haase to escape the inning without any further damage.
Feltner ended up going six innings, allowing one run on three hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. He lowered his ERA to 2.81 but did take a no-decision.
After the early home run, the Rockies struggled against Feltner’s counterpart Quinn Priester. He managed to allow one run on five hits over his five innings of work with four strikeouts and two walks. It was his first start of the season and an encouraging addition to an injury-ridden Brewers rotation.
The deadlock persisted until the bottom of the seventh inning when Mickey Moniak reached base on a double and subsequently scored on a single to center field by Doyle, his second RBI of the game, pushing the Rockies ahead 2-1.
The Brewers managed to equalize in the top of the eighth inning against reliever Jake Bird in his second inning of work. The Brewers managed to load the bases against Bird with no outs, forcing manager Bud Black to turn to veteran reliever Scott Alexander. He induced a ground ball double play ball off the bat of Isaac Collins that scored Jackson Chourio to tie the game 2-2, but Alexander managed to get a strikeout to end the inning and keep the game tied.
The bottom of the eighth inning proved decisive for the Rockies. Ryan McMahon led off with a double to right field off the wall and was followed by a walk from Sean Bouchard. Michael Toglia then doubled to left field for his third hit of the day, driving in McMahon and giving the Rockies a 3-2 lead. After Tyler Freeman grounded out to first, the Brewers intentionally walked Moniak to load the bases. A strikeout of pinch-hitter Kris Bryant left the Rockies with two outs and a hope that they could get the big hit.
Doyle made good on that hope and continued his stellar performance by hitting a bases-clearing double to center field, extending the Rockies’ lead 6-2. For good measure, Veen capped off the inning with a double to right field to score Doyle and make it a 7-2 lead before Seth Halvorsen shut the door in the ninth to secure the victory.

Doyle was the obvious star of the show, going 3-for-5 at the plate with a home run, a double, and five RBIs. The outputs of Toglia and McMahon illustrated how crucial the rest of the lineup is when it starts clicking.
This win improved the Rockies’ season record to 3-9, providing a glimmer of hope after a challenging start to the season. The team aims to build on this momentum as they prepare for their upcoming series against the San Diego Padres starting on Friday.
