Affected by Altitude Episode 153: Youth Springs Eternal

This episode was recorded on Sunday, February 23, 2025. Stats and events may not be current at time of posting.Β

Rocky Mountain Rooftop is the Colorado Rockies affiliate of Fans First Sports Network dedicated to covering all things Rockies. Our flagship podcast Affected by Altitude, hosted by Evan Lang and Skyler Timmins, covers all the happenings of the big league club. Other shows under the RMR banner include Every Rockie Ever and Rooftop Mingle featuring player interviews.

This week, Skyler and Evan celebrate the return of Colorado Rockies baseball. Spring training is underway for the team and while it is far too early to make judgment calls, the games have been a lot of fun thus far. One of the main storylines to watch is the youth movement in Scottsdale. Gabriel Hughes, Zac Veen, and other promising young prospects are fighting for their placements for 2025 and in the small sample size have brought some excitement and hope for the team’s future. Sure, the games are ultimately meaningless, but the impressions being made to fans as well as the team brass will make the next month an exciting and entertaining time in 2025. We also celebrate the return of Rockies commercials and discuss projections and expectations for Thairo Estrada.

Estrada joined the team after the Rockies non-tendered Brendan Rodgers — who went on to sign a minor league deal with Houston — as they hoped to try something new. Digging into the numbers and comparing to what was before, Estrada is projected as nothing more than a version of Rodgers that can steal bases and play some better defense. He isn’t a bad acquisition by the team, but more just a confusing one that doesn’t shake the boat too much for the team. Can he find a way to take a step forward in 2025 offensively? Or did the Rockies simply bring him in as a veteran mentor for some of their younger Latin players?
