Red Sox Need to Lock Up Ace Pitcher Garrett Crochet Sooner than Later

There will always be credit given where it is due. The Red Sox front office knew they had a need for a legitimate ace in the rotation and they went out and grabbed it. After seeing Max Fried sign with the Yankees, the Red Sox added the next best thing and that’s landing Garrett Crochet.

The Red Sox identified the talent and dipped into their deep prospect pool for the highly sought after pitcher. Now for the fun part, being able to sign him to the big ticket contract extension. Crochet has discussed he does not want to talk extension during the season, so the team needs to get it done sooner than later.

Red Sox Need to Sign Him Sooner than Later

When the Red Sox landed Crochet, it came with two years of control. This means that the team has him for those years before he hits market. That is a good thing for the Red Sox, meaning that there is time to still get a deal done. However, they should get it done sooner rather than later.

In a recent interview done on the Section 10 Podcast, Crochet hinted that the the front office and his agent have gone back and forth, talking about what each party wants and going through the feeling out process. Great! That’s great because that shows the front office believes in the talent they acquired and also shows that they want him for the long haul. However, it has been noted by Crochet that he does not want to talk extension during the regular season.

“For me personally, once the season starts, I would like for whatever conversations are currently being had to be placed on the back burner until the following offseason”.

Opening Day is 20 days away, so the clock is beginning to run out. Crochet also went on to mention that he does not want the extension talks to serve as a distraction and take the attention away from what the team will undergo through the 162 game season.

If you are the Red Sox, you want to hammer this contract out now while there is still time. The Red Sox got a deal done with pitcher Brayan Bello on March 7, so we are currently in that respective window. The longer the front office waits, the higher that price tag goes up and given how Crochet looks, it’s a safe bet to make the offer is going to need to be high. Get the check book ready.

Crochet Poised for Monstrous Season

The question will be “can he pick up where he left off last year” or “is he a true starter after just one year”. Well, the front office believes in his ability to be one and he thrived last season as one and showed how good he truly can be.

2024 was the largest workload for Crochet and he was a legit ace on the worst team in league history. He finished with a 3.58 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP. Crochet has a nose for the zone and attacks it full throttle. Crochet finished the 2024 campaign with a 35.1 strikeout percentage and an eye opening 12.88 K/9. He is the exact pitcher that the Red Sox wants to covet and does a best job getting the swing and miss. Welp, let’s say his small sample of Spring Training shows last year was no fluke thing.

Crochet has seen his velocity reach 101 MPH, so the cannon of an arm is back. Furthermore, in 6.1 innings pitched, Crochet has a 19.88 K/9 and a 50% strikeout percentage. Needless to say, Crochet is going to be your ace and pitch like one.

Crochet is poised for a monstrous season and his price tag is only going to go up. If an extension doesn’t get done before the season starts, the Red Sox need to come ready by next winter.

The Filthiest Pig is going to be on the loose so be ready to watch.
