Re-signing Zack Baun should be top priority for the Eagles this offseason
They haven’t even paraded down Broad Street yet. Does that make it too early to speculate on off-season priorities for the newly-crowned Philadelphia Eagles?
Well, considering I just saw a published mock draft — for 2026 — the answer is… no.
The 2024 version of the Eagles will assemble one more time on Friday, where they’ll party it up in Center City before saying their goodbyes. At that point, the 2025 season is underway. Philadelphia may or may not have a successor to offensive coordinator Kellen Moore by then. Moore departed on Tuesday to become head coach of the New Orleans Saints. Kevin Patullo, the Eagles passing game coordinator, and Nick Sirianni’s right-hand man, is said to be the favorite. But as of the time of this writing, no successor has been named.
Once a new OC is in place, attention will immediately turn to which impending free agents the team should re-sign. The article to which I’ve linked below contains the full list. It’s not particularly long, but a few names stand out.
Three of the players on that list wrapped up their seasons on Sunday in spectacular fashion. Linebacker Zack Baun had a pivotal interception of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and led the Eagles with seven tackles. Edge rusher Josh Sweat caused Baun’s interception by driving left tackle Joe Thuney into Mahomes as he released his throw. Sweat also collected 2.5 sacks and was unblock-able for most of the game. Defensive tackle Milton Williams joined Sweat often in Kansas City’s backfield, recording two sacks and a strip-fumble of Mahomes.
Sweat is not quite 28 years old, and since becoming a starter in 2021, has 33 sacks. Spotrac, which provides financial information about teams and players, believes Sweat will command a new deal in the neighborhood of $18-20 million per season. The Eagles are currently 21st in the NFL in available cap space, with just over $18 million. They can create more by restructuring contracts and releasing players. With or without Sweat, though, they are fairly deep at edge. Retaining him in the $18-20 million range may be a luxury they choose not to afford.
Williams should parlay his 2024 season into a big payday as well. Fellow defensive tackle Javon Hargrave got a 4-year, $84 million deal with San Francisco when he left Philly after the 2022 Super Bowl run. Hargrave was 30 years old at the time. Williams is just 26, and although his career production isn’t on par with Hargrave’s, his potential should land him a similar deal. The Eagles are also deep on the interior of their line, with Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter their building blocks. So, like Sweat, paying $20 million annually for Williams might be something they can do without.
One area at which Philadelphia is not deep is inside linebacker. Baun, who was signed on a one-year “prove it” deal last off-season after four relatively obscure seasons in New Orleans, cost Philly just $3.5 million this season. In return, he produced 151 tackles, which was more than he recorded in his four seasons in New Orleans combined. Baun was also named to the Pro Bowl and selected 1st Team All-Pro. Based on the market at inside backer, Baun, who is just 28 years old, is in line for a contract in the $14-to-$16 million a year range. Patrick Queen got $41 million over three seasons when he signed with Pittsburgh last off-season. Baun could get something similar. Baun was a seamless fit in coordinator Vic Fangio’s system, and with only rookie Jeremiah Trotter Jr, or perhaps Nakobe Dean, behind him on the depth chart, the Eagles need to make re-signing Baun their top off-season priority.
Losing players like Sweat and Williams will hurt, but with the depth Philly has up front, and their ability to draft and develop defensive linemen, they should be able to withstand those departures. Losing Baun would be a more significant blow. The Eagles found a gem when they signed him away from New Orleans. They should reward him for his success, and lock down one of the most important positions on their defense, by signing him to a new deal
