Rangers Bullpen Allows Just 2 Runs in Nearly 7 Innings As Texas Downs Sox 4-3
When your starting pitcher goes just 1.2 innings, itâs not very often that you can find a way to win the game.
However, thatâs exactly what happened for the Texas Rangers on Saturday night.
After Tyler Mahle couldnât find the strike zone for much of the night, the Rangers’ bullpen covered 6.1 innings, allowing just two runs as Texas held on to beat the Red Sox 4-3.
âI said we could be a little fluid down there [in the bullpen], which weâve shown that already,â Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said after the game.
âTo have two or three guys down there who can finish a game in high leverage times, theyâre doing a good job right nowâ.
Adolis Garcia got the scoring started in the first as part of his huge night. With two runners on, he lined a two-out, two-RBI double that went in and out of the glove of Sox left fielder Kristian Campbell.
In the very next inning, Jacob Webb would begin the Rangers’ bullpen parade and threw two innings, allowing just one run.
Hoby Milner took over in the fourth and picked up the win in his second straight strong outing in as many nights. Milner fired 1.1 innings of one-run baseball.
Looking to bridge the gap to its leverage arms, the Rangers turned to Gerson Garabito to make his season debut.
Garabito fired two huge scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while striking out two Red Sox hitters.
âI have to mention Garabito,â Bochy said. âThose are two big innings too, [in his] first time out there to go out there and do that in a tough part of their order, terrific job by himâ.
Garcia would add another RBI via a home run, and Marcus Semien came through with an RBI single to give Texas some cushion.
With a 4-2 lead heading into the bottom of the 8th, Robert Garcia came on for his second appearance of the season.
Garcia would allow a run but managed to limit the damage and keep the Rangers ahead heading into the 9th.
Entering the 9th inning with a one run lead, the Rangers turned to Chris Martin to try and earn the save with Luke Jackson having pitched each of the last two days.
Martin fired a 1-2-3 9th inning to earn the save and help the Rangers secure their first one-run victory of the season.
âReally good ballgame to win,â Bochy said. âWhen your starter, you have to take him out in the second inning there to come away with the win and hold them down, thatâs always a great winâ.
