Rangers Anounce Major Roster News Days Before Season Begins

In a bombshell series of moves, many of the Texas Rangers roster questions have been answered.

After having conversations with players this morning upon their arrival at the ballpark, many of the “on the fence” Rangers players now know their fate.

Over the weekend, Chris Young mentioned that Evan Carter was not a lock to make the MLB team, and now that will come to fruition.

Carter was informed this morning that he will not make the team and will start the season in the minor leagues.

This comes after Carter struggled in Spring Training following a season in which he played just 45 games last year.

Carter’s would be spot on the team will now go to veteran non-roster invitee Kevin Pillar, who will make the team as the squad’s fourth outfielder. Ezequiel Duran will also make the team

Joining Carter at AAA Round Rock will be Dane Dunning, who cleared waivers and will remain with the Rangers.

Dunning was placed on outright waivers on Sunday morning and was not claimed by any of the 29 other MLB teams in the 48-hour window.

On the Rangers rotation side of things, we now know who will be taking up the two spots in the Rangers rotation vacated due to the injuries to Cody Bradford and Jon Gray.

Vandy Boys Kumar Rocker and Jack Leiter have both been told they have made the team and will be a part of the starting rotation.

Leiter will make his season debut on Friday night in the Rangers’ second game of the season and Rocker on Monday when the team opens a three-game set in Cincinnati against the Reds.

According to Bruce Bochy, the Rangers rotation will “probably” look like this during the first time through.

Thursday vs Boston – Nathan Eovaldi
Friday vs Boston – Jack Leiter
Saturday vs Boston – Tyler Mahle
Sunday vs Boston – Jacob deGrom
Monday at Cincinnati – Kumar Rocker

On the injury front, Chris Young says that he expects both Corey Seager (calf) and Josh Jung (neck) to be ready for Opening Day.

Seager did not play in either of the Rangers’ two exhibition contests against the Royal,s and Jung took one less at bat than the rest of the starters due to his neck soreness.

Bochy said that Jung wanted to and could have continued but was taken out for precautionary reasons. Jung was scheduled to play on Tuesday but was scratched from the lineup.
