Raiders, Smith Come to Terms on Contract Extension
The Las Vegas Raiders have come to terms with newly acquired quarterback Geno Smith. Smith was under term when the trade went down, but the Raiders have ensured an extension that will compensate him better for his play. The new deal is for two years and is worth $85.5 million. Now the Raiders have Smith in the mix for the next three seasons total.
Raider Agree to Deal With Smith
This is a great deal for the Raiders and Smith. There is no denying that the Raiders need improved quarterback play and Smith has very familiarity with Pete Carroll. In fact, the Seahawks really revived his career and turned him around for the better.
Geno Smith has a passer rating of 95.9 with 12,961 yards, 76 touchdowns and 36 interceptions in 54 games for the Seahawks in his career. All of the upside that surrounded him in his draft year finally came to fruition. Being his a mobile quarterback that can extend plays and execute, he will be a weapon for Chip Kelly in this offense. What this also signals, is that the Raiders won’t be going quarterback at sixth overall.
What’s Next?
All eyes are now on John Spytek and the Raiders front office for draft day. With the Raiders locking up their quarterback position, they won’t need to sell out for Cam Ward or Shedur Sanders in the draft. They could immediately address the defense, depending on who’s available, but they could very well select the running back Jeanty at sixth overall.
Jeanty would add to an offense that has potential. Imagine a core of Jeanty, Bowers, and Meyers. That’s appetizing. There’s a lot to be thankful for right now and this is a good signing overall and the draft should be a bit more clearer after it.
