Rafael Devers is Back and the League Should Be on Notice
It is very good to not panic early depending on the trend for your baseball team or favorite player. The grind of a 162 season is long and for a good reason. When it comes to Rafael Devers, there was no need to panic because of his horrific start. Instead, he is rejuvenated and is very much back and that’s scary for the rest of the league.
The Rafael Devers Rollercoaster Ride
Let’s not sugar coat it, the start was historically bad. Devers went on to strikeout the most amount of times in anyone’s first three games of the season. It was ugly, demoralizing and defeating and for a player that is without question the Red Sox best hitter. The adjustment to being the designated hitter might not be easy, but Devers is best at hitting baseballs. It’s his job and he does it well. Issue is, he was not making contact and not hitting at all.
Devers had a rough March, going 0-19 and striking out 15 times. Yikes. Things weren’t good and you could label numerous factors towards the slow start. However, the one glaring thing was his timing. Devers was not getting his timing right and was often seeing him whiff on pitches in the zone. Essentially, he was going through spring training in meaningful games. There is encouragement though.
Baby steps. Devers was seeing the ball well and was doing a good job generating his walks. The final three games on the month of March, he was generating four walks, so that’s encouraging. Also, he was not chasing pitches, ranking in the 94th percentile for chase rate and also for walk rate. At this point, you could see the hits coming. He is working and battling and improving overall. Let’s just say they did and oh boy did they ever.
Devers is Back Baby
The hits came and they are here and if you are the rest of the league, watch out. Devers is 10-19 and has only struck out twice in the month of April. That’s a huge step forward if you ask me. The hits aren’t just singles either, he is making hard contact on the baseball and is doing damage at the plate.
Of his hits, four have gone for extra base hits, which includes his first home run of the season.

Devers put on a clinic on Sunday Night Baseball. Between him and Alex Bregman, they did damage against the Green Monster and got well after the entire Cardinals pitching staff. Devers went 4-4 with two doubles and drove in three more runs. Huge day.
Devers April statistics are encouraging if you are a Red Sox fan. This is wonderful to see and if you are the league and you saw what the Red Sox did on Sunday Night Baseball, you’ve been put on notice.
