What Watson’s contract restructure means for the 2025 Browns

On the morning of March 6th the Cleveland Browns announced another restructuring of the $230 million dollar guaranteed contract for quarterback Deshaun Watson. The move saves the Cleveland Browns $36.3 million dollars in salary cap space for the 2025 offseason. Watson will most likely spend the 2025 season on the PUP (physically unable to play) list for the Cleveland Browns in 2025. He suffered two torn Achilles Tendon injuries in the last six months. Prior to making this move the Cleveland Browns were $22 million dollars over the 2025 NFL Salary Cap. Now that they are under that, other moves are expected by this organization.

Prior to Watson being restructured Safety Juan Thornhill was designated for a post June 1st, 2025, release. That will save $3.4 million in salary cap space after June 1st.I would expect money to be saved with a CB Denzel Ward contract restructure. That move could save $9.1 million dollars in cap space. Another thought is trading CB Greg Newsome to save another $3.5 million dollars. This along with news of Joel Bitonio staying for his 12th season shows that the Cleveland Browns are still trying to compete.

It was reported by longtime Browns beat reporter Mary Kay Cabot that Cleveland Browns plan to move on from running back Nick Chubb. That was sad news for Browns fans considering how well loved he is in Cleveland. But after two season ending injuries and at the age of 29 the Cleveland Browns may feel it is best to get younger and healthier at running back. The Myles Garrett trade request is still looming over this organization as well. It appears that the 2025 offseason is showing turmoil for the Cleveland Browns. Despite that turmoil the Cleveland Browns and Andrew Berry appear to be staying on course and trying to win in 2025. And the Deshaun Watson restructure seems to be the start of that.
