Why this Year’s Cavaliers Team Feels Better Than the 2016 Team
On July 8th ,2010, on ESPN, in a prime-time evening time slot, Cleveland Cavaliers Star Player Lebron James announced his “decision” to take his talents to South Beach Florida. He put a dagger in the hearts of Cleveland sports fans and chased championships with the Miami Heat. Four years later after winning two NBA titles in four NBA Finals appearances, through an article in Sports Illustrated on July 11th, 2014. Lebron James announced that he was returning home to Cleveland Ohio. Lebron James vowed to bring the city their first championship since 1964 with the Cleveland Browns. The promise was kept on June 19th ,2016 when the Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Golden State Warriors in game seven of the NBA Finals to become World Champions. Lebron James delivered for his hometown team. On July 9th, 2018, Lebron James left Cleveland again for the Los Angeles Lakers. It was different this time because he fulfilled his promise to the Cleveland Sports fans. Fast forward to today and the Cleveland Cavaliers are 46-10 with the top seed in the Eastern Conference and the NBA’s best record.
The 2024 / 2025 Cleveland Cavaliers team has felt special throughout this season. The beginning of this team’s formation was in the 2021 NBA Draft when the Cavaliers selected center / power forward Evan Mobley from USC with the third overall pick. In that same year the Cavaliers traded for center Jarrett Allen from the Brooklyn Nets. A year later the team traded for guard Donovan Mitchell from the Utah Jazz. These three moves put together the core of this team, and Cleveland Cavaliers fans have been treated to the organic development of this Cavaliers team since those moves.
In 2014-2018 the Cleveland Cavaliers won four consecutive Eastern Conference Championships and one World Championship in 2016. The run for that team was put together fast and when it was over in 2019, it seemed surreal. It was almost as if it didn’t even happen. With this year’s Cavaliers team, the fans have seen growth and gradual improvement each year since 2022. And today with first year head coach Kenny Atkinson this team not only feels real, but it also feels sustainable. No more one-year contracts for our star player wondering if he is going to stay or leave. We have our coach and our core under muti year contracts. This Cleveland Cavaliers team is here to stay for the next few years. And it is time that Cleveland sports fans enjoy it. God only knows that we deserve it!
