Blue Jays Return To Win Column After 6-2 Win Vs. Red Sox
After being swept in their first series on the road against the Mets, the Blue Jays ship out to Boston to take on their AL East rivals in the Red Sox. Jose Berrios would get the nod to open the series on the mound for Toronto, and the home team Red Sox would send Richard Fitts to try and combat the Blue Jay’s hitters in this Monday evening contest.
Jumping to the top of the third with no score, two runners on with only one away and Andres Gimenez would send a fly ball deep into right field that would be good enough to score Bo Bichette from third on the sac fly, giving Toronto the first tally of the ballgame. George Springer would add on in the same inning, by slapping a base hit into left field with two outs, allowing Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to score and give the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead.
The Sox would answer in the bottom half with two runners in scoring position with only one out themselves, and Rafael Devers would send a sac fly to the wall in center field, giving the runner on third plenty of time to come in and score and cut the deficit in half making it 2-1.
Moving to the top of the fifth inning, after Gimenez reached base and stole second, it gave the Jays a prime opportunity to score again. Toronto would cash in on the chance when George Springer would lace a ball down into left field once again, sending Gimenez from second to home and adding on the insurance run and widening the Jay’s lead back to two.
Now in the top of the seventh, and the exact same sequence of events would unfold for the Blue Jays, Gimenez reaches base, takes second on the steal, and George Springer right behind him to clean up and score the run on his third hit of night giving Toronto a 4-1 advantage. The inning would continue and Will Wagner would step up and knock in his first RBI of the season with a base hit, scoring Springer and adding on making it 5-1.
Berrios would have a stellar outing in this game only giving up the one run in seven innings of work, but would be taken out in the eighth and replaced with Yimi Garcia. In Garcia’s inning of relief duty, he allowed one run to come in when Tristan Casas rifled a line drive off the Green Monster in left field, chipping away at the monstrous Blue Jays lead making it 5-2.
Going to the last inning of the game, Toronto found themselves with the bases loaded and two away, and Nathan Lukes would manage to pop a shallow fly ball right behind second base that would avoid everyone and drop in the middle of all the fielders, cashing in another run and adding on some extra cushion with a 6-2 lead.
Jeff Hoffman would come from the bullpen in the bottom of the ninth for the Jays, and would wrap up in quick fashion, sealing the win going three up, three down.
Toronto was much more effective in scoring runs in this game, which was a major loss for them and a big factor in being swept in the Mets series. George Springer had himself quite the day going 4/4, and driving in three big RBI’s. Easton Lucas will take the mound in game two of their series on Tuesday, looking to make it two wins in a row.
