Blue Jays Lose 8-4 After Long Extra Innings Game Vs. Mariners
With the first win of the series in the books, and only one game back of recapturing the first place spot in the division, the Blue Jays looked to extend their winning streak to four in a row and take at least two out of three and the series win on Saturday afternoon in game two against Seattle. Jose Berrios would be in charge of the mound to start the game for the Jays, and would go into a pitching matchup opposite Logan Gilbert for Seattle.
Berrios made quick work in the top of the first, and in the bottom half the Jays would get on the board after Vladimir Guerrero Jr. would reach base and Anthony Santander would loop a single into right field and Vladdy would get the wave home and score easily to get Toronto out in front in the first inning yet again making it 1-0.
Toronto threatened to score again in the bottom of the third, but after loading the bases with two outs, Logan Gilbert was able to weather the storm and get out of the jam and leave the Blue Jays stranded.
Top half of the fifth, Berrios found himself in his own kind of trouble with two runners in scoring position, and Seattle would cash in via a Cal Raleigh double to put the Mariners in front 2-1.
The Blue Jays evened the scoring at 2-2 in the bottom half of the fifth, when Andres Gimenez reached base, and right on cue stole second and was promptly driven in by Alejandro Kirk. They would eventually take the lead in the very next inning, as Ernie Clement would find his way to second, and Bo Bichette would rip a line drive to center field to score Clement give the Jays a 3-2 lead.
Seattle refused to give in and Ben Williamson would go yard to left field to bring the game level once again in the top of the seventh and make it a 3-3 game.
Both teams would be scoreless going into the ninth, and after Seattle failed to put one across, the Jays were in a prime position to walk it off and take the win.
The Jays were able to get runners on and one in scoring position, but Gimenez and Springer would popout and groundout to end the inning and the game would need extra innings.
The Blue Jays had their backs against the wall, being faced with the bases loaded, but the pitching and defence managed to bail them out and send the game to the bottom half still tied.
With the runner starting the inning on second base, Alejandro Kirk opened up with a groundout that was able to move George Springer over to third with only one out. Alan Roden would be next up, but he would pop up on the infield and couldn’t quite get the job done. Ernie Clement would step up next with two away and would fly out to right field, and the game would continue on to the 11th.
The Jays were able to blank the Mariner’s offence once again, and in the bottom of the 11th, it would be Anthony Santander against Andres Munoz with a runner on third and two outs. Santander couldn’t get the job finished either, as Munoz worked out of it and would send the game to yet another inning to the 12th.
In the top of the 12th inning, the Jays would run into deep trouble, as Jacob Barnes would come into the game and the Mariners would load the bases and eventually Seattle would cash in and take a 4-3 lead. With the bases still loaded and two away, Rowdy Tellez would step to the plate and launch a moonshot of a grand-slam into the seats and the game would be blown wide open and Seattle would score five in the inning to take an 8-3 lead.
Seattle would go into the bottom of the ninth and seal the win at last and Toronto would lose a heartbreaker after the hard fought battle in 12 innings.
Toronto would do everything right on paper, the pitching was great, the hitting came through early but couldn’t find it’s way back in the clutchest moments of the game. The series between these two is now split at 1-1, with the rubber match on Sunday, and Kevin Gausman slated to take the hill for the Blue Jays in hopes for the series win.
