Blue Jays Finish First Game At Camden Yards, Lose 5-4 To Orioles

Toronto was slated to come into Baltimore for three games after finishing their four game series against the Red Sox, but the first game of the series on Friday evening would be postponed after beginning and both teams would have to wait for the following day to play out the first full game of the series. Saturday afternoon rolled around, and both the Blue Jays and the Orioles were ready to step back into the ballpark and play a full game. Apart from the game itself, fans were in for a treat, getting to witness arguably one of the best jersey matchups in the league, with Toronto rocking their powder blue unis, while Baltimore went with their all bright orange jerseys.

As for the pitching matchups, the Blue Jays would send off Bowden Francis to the mound, and the Orioles would go with Tomoyuki Sugano to face off with Toronto for the second time this season.

The Blue Jays would jump out early on the scoreboard, with Guerrero Jr. scoring a run in the first, Bichette scoring a run in the second, and Anthony Santander blasting his first Blue Jay’s homerun in the top of the third.

The bats were electric early for Toronto, and Bowden Francis was dealing pitches on the mound going four straight innings without giving up a single run.

Baltimore finally got themselves on the comeback train, when in the bottom of the fifth,  Heston Kjerstad launched a two-run homer over the center field wall and suddenly their three run deficit had been cut to only one. Very next inning, the Orioles would tie it with their second homerun of the game, this time coming from Adley Rutschman and the game would be back to level at 3-3.

The inning would not end there, as after Vladimir Guerrero Jr. dropped the third out at first base on defence, the inning would continue and allow Cedric Mullins to come up the the plate and he would smack a triple into left-center field, that would score another two runners, and just like that the Orioles would go up 5-3.

Bo Bichette would ground into a double play in the top half of the eighth inning, but with a runner on third and nobody out, a run would come in to score and the Jays would claw back to within one themselves.

Unfortunately, that RBI from Bichette would be the last one the Blue Jays could muster, as Felix Bautista would come from the Oriole’s bullpen and close out the ninth inning sealing the win for the Orioles.

A great start from Toronto was fizzled out by a harsh ending, and although the offence was capable enough to plate four runs, Baltimore was simply able to outperform in the clutch moments of the game. The series wraps up on Sunday, and Toronto will look to split their second series in a row against the O’s, in their now shortened two game series at Camden Yards.
