Blue Jays Bounce Back With Dominating 8-2 Win Vs. Orioles

After a slew of fireworks and festivities to bring in a new year of baseball, the Blue Jays find themselves on the wrong end of a blowout, and looked to find any way to bounce back in game two of their four-game opening series against the Orioles. After Jose Berrios gave a less than expected performance on opening day, Toronto sends their secondary ace Kevin Gausman to the mound to matchup against the stacked hitting lineup of Baltimore. On the other side of the bump, the O’s would send 41 year old Charlie Morton to face off against the Jays, hoping to start their season with an early two game winning streak.

Game two of the four game set got off to a very similar start to the first one, this time with sophomore phenom Jackson Holliday blasting a homer over the wall to get Baltimore back on the board early to take a 1-0 lead. After a sacrifice fly scored another run in the top half of the fourth inning, fans inside the stadium might have begun to think they were about to see a game like they just watched the night previous, but things were about to turn around in the home team’s favour in no time.

Three straight hits to open the bottom of the fourth put Toronto in prime position to tie up the score, and Charlie Morton certainly started to show some cracks in his pitching that the Jays took full advantage of. Nathan Lukes drew a walk with the bases loaded with still no outs to bring home Toronto’s first run of the ballgame, and after two sacrifice flies and an RBI single from Anthony Santander, the Jays left the fourth inning with five runs leading the score 5-2.

Baltimore tonight would feel like Toronto last night as the two runs they were able to bring across would be the only ones for them all game, while Toronto would blow the game open even more in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings scoring three more runs and taking a commanding 8-2 lead. Nick Sandlin would come into the game in the top of the ninth to put the game away and the Blue Jays evened up the series at one game apiece with two more to go to end the weekend.

Although it’s only game number two of the season, there was certainly a kind of must-win feel after what had happened on opening day and the Jays definitely delivered an impressive performance to get back on track. Now with the first win of the season under their belts, the Blue Jays hope to go into the first weekend of the season and come out with the series victory.
