Blue Jays Arrive In Queens To Begin Roadtrip, Lose To Mets 5-0
After defending home turf for seven straight games, Toronto takes to the road, starting their trip in Queens, New York and hoping to spoil the New York Met’s home opening series. The first two series’ the Mets played on the road to begin the year, were certainly not hte way they hoped it would go for them, going 3-3 over their first six games. With the Met’s incredibly stacked lineup of hitters, including their new $765 million man Juan Soto, the Mets were probably hoping for a much better record coming into their homestand, especially now having to host a Blue Jays team that has been red hot after the first week of the season.
The pitching matchup for this Friday afternoon contest would see the Jays send Kevin Gausman to the hill to face off against Tylor Megill. Megill picke up the win in his first start of the season against Houston, going five innings and only giving up one run and racking up six strikeouts. Gausman also picked up the win in Toronto’s opening series against Blatimore, so both pitchers are battling to keep their undefeated record alive.
The game begun at Citi Field and Gausman came into the game ready to go, but was met early with resistance as Francisco Lindor led the game off with a double, and Pete Alonso blasted a 2-run homer into the right field bullpen to put the Mets in front early.

Gausman was able to settle down in the few innings following, throwing two straight shutout innings. The Jay’s bats on the other hand still we looking to find their first run of the game going into the fourth inning, as Tylor Megill looked razor sharp from the very first pitch.
Fast forward to the top of the sixth inning, Megill has been taken out of the ball game in exchange for Reed Garrett, and this was the Jay’s best opportunity to tie the score. two runners on and only one away with Andres Gimenez at the plate, things looked promising, but after Gimenez and then Alejandro Kirk strike out in consecutive order, the Jays squander their opportunity and the Mets get out of a jam unscathed.
The bottom half of the inning however, the Mets finally broke through after Gausman was taken out after 5.1 innings and replaced by Mason Fluharty. Fluharty was making just his second big league appearance, and the first batter he would face in the game would be none other than Juan Soto. With a man already on base, all it took was two pitches for Soto to get a hold on one of Fluharty’s sweeping breaking balls, and drove it into the corner for an RBI double. after intentionally walking Pete Alonso immediately after, Brandon Nimmo went left on lefty and smacked his own RBI double to right, increasing their lead to 4-0.After the Nimmo double and only facing the three batter minimum, Fluharty was taken out and replaced by Jacob Barnes to try and get out of the inning with no more damage being done. Barnes gave up a sacrifice fly later in the inning, but was able to get out of it only surrendering the one run, but the Mets had done all they needed to put the game even further out of reach at 5-0.
The Met’s bullpen stayed sharp and were able to keep the Blue Jays off the scoreboard the entire length of the game, taking the opening game of the series and getting the shutout win in their home opener. Despite both teams having the same amount of hits (Four), The Jays weren’t able to cash in on their opportunities like New York was in this contest. Gausman had a quality start fro Toronto, but the Bullpen just couldn’t get the job done like they had been during their homestand. The Jays will look to bounce back strong in game number two of their series, when Chris Bassitt takes the mound for Toronto.
