Alex Bregman Remains Unsigned

Alex Bregman was supposed to be a highly touted free agent entering the 2024-2025 offseason. His agent, Scott Boras, may have once again outpriced the market on one of his clients.

The Houston Astros offered him a 6 year, $156 million contract, which he and Boras laughed at. Not the money they were looking for.

The Chicago Cubs were considered frontrunners for a while, but it appears they have now backed out of consideration. The Detroit Tigers are interested, and the Astros have apparently upped their offer.

With Spring Training beginning for most clubs this week, a Scott Boras client is once again unsigned. If you forgot, Boras had three high profile players that remained unsigned through most of spring training in 2024.

Boras clients Jordan Montgomery, Blake Snell, Cody Bellinger and Matt Chapman all remained unsigned last offseason as spring training was underway.

It appears that Bregman, a perennial All-Star and 2-time World Series Champion, will be without a job as spring training starts in 2025.

Bregman reportedly wants a 6 year deal, and he obviously wants more than $156 million for it. He has been a very good fielder over his career and he has also been very good at the plate.

He would be a good addition for many teams, so why does he remain unsigned?

There are teams out there who do not like working with Scott Boras. He does tend to get his clients paid.

There are other teams who don’t really need a third baseman. That’s fine.

I believe they thought there would be a bidding war over Bregman, but the 30-year-old isn’t getting any younger, and his best playing days are probably behind him.

I’m not saying he isn’t a good player anymore, quite the contrary. But what will he look like at 36 or 37 making more than $25 million a year?

I believe that he is going to wind up with either Detroit or back in Houston, although I don’t know if his pride will let him resign with the Astros. He said his goodbyes and is supposed to be gone from that city.

It will be interesting to watch and see what Boras can do, if he can work magic and get what he wants (Juan Soto style) or if Bregman will be stuck taking a lesser deal like some of Boras’ clients had to do in 2024.
