MLB Opening Weekend: American League Takeaways

The 2025 MLB Season is underway and there is already plenty of excitement coming out of the American League.

Many teams have surprised over the first weekend while others have fallen behind a bit earlier than expected.

Below, let’s break down some of the takeaways from the earliest portion of the season.

Bronx Bombers Are Back

No Juan Soto, no problem. The New York Yankees crushed their way to a sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers by scoring 36 runs in three games. This includes nine home runs on Saturday afternoon. Aaron Judge broke out with three home runs and eight RBI. Jazz Chisholm and Austin Wells are also off to quick starts. The power bats of the Yankees have been centered around these new torpedo bats that have been in baseball for years now. New York dominated Brewer pitching and built plenty of momentum.

Rafael Devers, The Season Has Started

The Boston Red Sox came into the season with higher expectations than previous years but their cornerstone has not started the season well. It has been a historically bad start for Devers in Boston. Through five games, the Red Sox are 1-4 as Devers is hitless at 0-for-19 with 15 strikeouts. Whether it is the move to DH or something else, the Red Sox will need Devers to snap out of this and do it quickly.

Chicago White Sox Have Some Breakouts

The Chicago White Sox came into the season with expectations of being one of the worst teams in baseball. Now 2-2 is nothing to get crazy over but this is a Chicago team that is expected to lost 110+ games. In the two victories, the White Sox have scored 17 runs. There has been a little pop in the bats of Andrew Benintendi and Andrew Vaughn. If nothing else, the White Sox have been fun early on.

Minnesota Twins Still Winless

The Minnesota Twins continue to be the lone winless team in the American League. After being swept by the St. Louis Cardinals, the Twins hit an early rock bottom with a 9-0 loss to the lowly White Sox. Minnesota was one of the favorites in the AL Central but have not played the part early on.
