Maryland Basketball: Thoughts on Maryland’s Big Win Against Michigan

The Terps continue the magic on the road!!!!

The Terps go on the road and take down the #17 Michigan Wolverines and now Maryland is sitting in a great position to earn an double bye going into next weeks Big Tourney and with this huge win Maryland improved to 23-7 overall and 13-6 in Big Ten play

The Terps have won six of their last seven and 10 of their last 12 games. Since Jan. 10, the Terps are 12-3.

This was Maryland’s seventh Quad 1 win and its fourth over a ranked team this season. The win was also Maryland’s fifth true road win of the season, marking the most since also having five in 2019-20.

The start of the game the Terps were playing great Terps defense, but the offense just didn’t look right as they were forcing shots and not moving the ball, so it the offense didn’t settle into the game it might have bene a long night for the Terps.

At the 11:52 mark of the first half Michigan went on a 8-0 hitting a couple 3’s which would be one of the first of many runs this game would have as Michigan led 12-7.

Rodney Rice broke the Michigan run with a 3 before Rice’s 3 the Terps were 2-14 from the field.

Derek Queen would then assert himself as the Terps went on 12-2 run of there own, as the defense was still stellar, but the offense was still not taking good shots and Michigan was hanging around.

Julian Reece ran into foul trouble at the 6:30 mark in the first half and Reece had to take seat on the bench.

With Reece on the bench Selton Miguel stepped up hitting a couple 3’s and the Terp’s picked up the offensive pace and built the lead to 26-18 and that would end of being a 19-4 run over the next 6:28 and Maryland seemed to be taking control of the game.

A pleasant surprise in the first half was the presence of Jordan Geronimo who was making an impact on both ends of the floor including a poster dunk.

Maryland took a 33-22 halftime lead and looked to be in total control.

The second half started off with Maryland getting 3 turnovers in row, but only got 2 points out of it and I thought that would be the beginning and the end for Maryland.

But, Miguel stayed hot and the defense was still in fine form at the first 2nd half media time out as the Terps took a lead of 38-29.

Over the next 14 minutes, Maryland fought off several Michigan runs and at one time Michigan cut the lead to 2, but whether it was Rodney Rice, Ja’Kobi Gillespie or Miguel they each had a shot that stopped a Michigan run.

In the last 4:20 of the game the Terps went 3:30 without a score but the defense kept them with the lead and helped to take down the Wolverines on the road.

This win was all about defense and the maturity of the Terps, as they fought off every Michigan run in a calm fashion.

The Terps defense created 16 Michigan turnovers which lead to 21 points off turnovers and they also had 12 steals on the night.

Maryland also had 17 second chance points to Michigan’s 9.

Rice led the Terp’s with 19 points. Derek Queen and Miguel both finished with 17 points and DQ also added 12 rebounds to record his 12th double double of the season.

Even with 2 of the big guns in Gillespie and Reece going 4-18, the Terps still found a way to win and in impressive fashion as the Terps never waivered and stayed strong.

Some people might think I am nuts and crazy and I might even catch some grief for this statement, but I posted it on X and I simply said
When Miguel is hot and the defense is playing tough, the Terp’s are hard to beat, now add in some Geronimo, this team can beat anyone in the Country!!!. I will stand by that 100%. If M continues to play at this level Maryland could be a sneaky pick to make a deep run in the NCAA tournament.

Lastly, it is senior Day this Saturday against Northwestern and it is a day to celebrate the seniors, but there is one senior in particular I want to take mention of and he goes by JuJu.

I have players that I refer to as Mr. Maryland and those are the loyal Terps that are homegrown and proudly represent the great state of Maryland, such as Bias, Dixon, Baxter, Walt Williams, Branch, Booth, Vazquez, Tremble, Cowan, Jalen (Styx) Smith , Morsell to name a few, but there is one player that I must put at the top of my list and that is Julian Reece.

JuJu has had an interesting journey, as the has grown up from a kid who was a freshmen to a man and should be proud of what he has accomplished. He has been through some losing seasons, mid year coaching changes which lead us to this moment.

I am proud to say that he will go down as one of my favorite al time Maryland players and it has been an honor to watch him grow in his 4 years at Maryland. He could have packed in over the last 3 seasons and transferred and I don think a whole lot of people would him as well. He stayed true to the program and has been rewarded with an incredible year this year, but more importantly he stayed true to himself and the state the he loves.

If anyone personally knows JuJu, please tell him that I have nothing but love and respect for him and he is one of the best ever to don the University of Maryland jersey and I wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors.

I hope Maryland fans on Saturday gives him the standing ovation that he rightfully deserves!!

Now Terps, go win Mr. Maryland a title!!
