Maryland Basketball: It Is What It Is and Where Are We At?

Well Maryland fans….Here we are once again!!!!!

The last couple weeks have been crazy to say the least, so I am going to try and put all of it into context.
I will be speaking for myself and myself only. This article is about my feelings as a Maryland basketball fan.

First, here is what should have taken place.

Maryland fans and players should have enjoyed the experience of not just making it into the Sweet Sixteen, but how they got there with that last second Derek Queen shot off the glass.

But instead we got this:

So, for those that follow the Maryland program and also those that follow college basketball in general all know what Kevin Willard did to not only his reputation, but to the Maryland basketball program and the Maryland faithful.

So I will show him the same respect as he has shown us and say “F YOU KEVIN WILLIARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

There have been other things that have come out in regards to the former coach, but I will just leave it at that.
Soon I will be able to really talk the talk. I don’t want to lie to anyone, that would be wrong!!!!!

So, the search was on for a new head coach. Maryland already is without an AD, so now there is no head coach and no AD.

The process moved rather quickly, but could have been in the works for several days, this would all depend on what you belief and what you don’t believe.

So, the search is over and the Terps have found there new coach.

The powers that be have found there guy in the traveled Buzz Williams. I will save my thoughts on this hire for later.

So, I will give Coach Buzz some kudos as his resume is certainly better then the previous two coach’s in Mark Turgeon and the former head coach. He has won wherever he has been. Coach Buzz has coached in the ACC (Va Tech), Big East (Marquette) and most recently in the SEC at Texas A&M. His teams play hard nosed basketball and play defense and rebound very well, which are good things.

I don’t like the hire as I wish they would have gone in another direction as do many of the Maryland fans. There are many Terp fans who are scratching there heads and saying to themselves what is happening. So, it is what it is!!!

Where are we at???

We have a head coach with no staff and no players on the roster and no apparent ties to the DMV in terms of recruiting. Through graduation (4), or entering the transfer portal (7) or heading to the NBA (Take a guess) . The Maryland roster is completely bare.

Coach Buzz has his work cut out for him, but there are a few things that he needs to do and do them quickly.

First, he must get busy on the transfer portal and some bodies to College Park and he must reach out to Rodney Rice who out of all the players that entered the transfer portal might be convinced to come back to Maryland.

Secondly, he must reach out to the only incoming freshmen in this years class in Chris Jeffery and get him to stay on course with Maryland.

PS – If he goes with Villanova, we will have some more things to discuss!.

Now, I feel this is the most important thing.

But first I really need to talk about how I feel about the Buzz Williams hiring and how it ties into things.

I think Maryland administration really screwed the pooch on this hiring, as the Maryland fan base is starving to be excited about something and after what has transpired over the last couple weeks, as we diehard, lifelong and live, eat and breath Maryland basketball fans deserve.
We were excited and felt good about things and then BAMMMMM.

Maryland had a chance to excite the base and to get a coach that was a TERP FOR LIFE!!!!

I wanted them to get a former Maryland player who could come in and take over the program and bring it back to national prominence, while being the Maryland head coach for many years to come.

Duane Simpkins, Juan Dixon, Steve Blake, Tony Shinn (Not a former Maryland player, but is a Terp through and through) and Greivis Vásquez just to name a few. So what, they had limited experience or even no experience at the college level, to me that is not the most important thing. It might have taken a few years and wouldn’t be easy, but the fan base could live with it. A Terp legend becoming the new head coach would have set the fan base on fire!.

The new coach had to have ties to the Maryland program and one that would be around for many years to come.  One that is piped into the DMV recruiting scene and is in the know when it comes to the hottest basketball talent in the Country in the DMV. Coach Buzz unfortunately has a track record of not sticking around very long at whatever school he is coaching at. That is not a knock on him at all that is factual and on the record. as well as not having any major ties to the DMV.

Now back to what I feel is the most important thing.

Coach Buzz needs to have one or two of the previously mentioned former Maryland players to be assistant coaches and to get them prepared to take over the program that they had gave the blood, sweat and tears for when they played. I would like to see Juan Dixon, Steve Blake or Greivis Vásquez be the next assistant coaches.

Coach Buzz will need to also hire an assistant that is tied into the the high school DMV recruiting scene. I would like Tony Shinn to be that guy. Although he was on the staff with the former coach, I will not hold that against him as he would be an awesome recruiter and is someone who already has the respect of the the DMV and someone who is all about the DMV, as the grew up in Maryland and played for George Mason where he is currently the Head Coach.

Maryland basketball was once again a part of the national scene and a part of the national discussion for there play on the court and how they had an incredible season., but instead Maryland basketball was hijacked and sabotaged and an entire season basically went down the drain and all the achievements that the Terps had this past year has gone away and is now an after thought.

So, Buzz Williams is the new Maryland head coach, he has no staff and no players and although I do not like the hire, I do have “Maryland Pride”, so I will continue to live, eat and breathe Maryland Terps and I will do my part in supporting the basketball program that I love.

GO TERPS!!!!!!!
LETS GET BUZZING!!!!!!!
