Maryland Basketball: Go West Terps!

Well Terps fan, the moment has arrived!!!

The Terps are heading west as the #4 seed in the west region and have a first round matchup with the WAC conference tournament winners Grand Canyon University..

Grand Canyon is coached by Bryce Drew who 27 years ago in 1998 hit one of the most memorable buzzer beating 3 point shot in NCAA tournament history as his alma mater #13 Valparaiso team upset #4 Ole Miss.

GCU is making its fourth NCAA tournament trip in Drew’s five years at GCU with the schools first tournament win last year against Saint Mary’s and pushed a very good and eventual Final Four team in Alabama in the second round.

This year team returns four starters returned from last years team and CBS college basketball analyst Clark Kellogg is quoted as saying “That Grand Canyon team is not a typical mid-major team, They’ve got size, great experience. They’ve been to the tournament. That’s going to be a tough challenge for a very good and explosive Maryland team.”

I do not mean any disrespect to the Antelopes of Grand Canyon, but I do not feel we should go into great detail about this game.

It is clear that Maryland will have huge size advantage and certainly will have more talent on the floor then GCU will have.

The current line on the game has Maryland favored by 10.5, which I think will shift higher before game time.

Prediction:

The Terps have some starters who have never been in the dance before and have never been in a moment of this magnitude, which could be the biggest hurdle for Maryland to overcome

I expect this game to start off slow for Maryland as they settle into the game and by halftime should be a good position to take over the game in the second half, as the Terps will just wear down GCU with there size advantage.

Terps win this game by 15 points 80-65.

If Maryland survives this first round game, which they should, the Terps will play the winner of Memphis and Colorado State in the second round, which should present a little bit more of a challenge for the Terps, but the outcome should be the same as in the first round and Maryland then will have some work to do in the Sweet Sixteen.
