Maple Leafs Acquire Scott Laughton from Philadelphia
Toronto got their guy. After going all-in on Brayden Schenn, the Leafs pivoted to Scott Laughton, and got the deal done.
Scott Laughton, 30, has 11 goals, 16 assists, for 27P on the season, and will slot right into that 3C position. Laughton will be a pivotal piece for the Maple Leafs heading into the playoffs with his defensive abilities and the physicality he will bring on that third line. Laughton can move up and down the lineup as well if need be. He will be able to take a spot on the penalty kill, giving Toronto’s natural penalty killers a little bit of a break.
Toronto trades F Nikita Grebenkin and a 1st round pick for the Oakville native, while Philadelphia sends a 4th and a 6th, as well as retaining half of Laughton’s contract. Toronto needs to shed some cap to be able to finish out the rest of the year, so you wonder if Max Domi or David Kampf might have played their last game as a Maple Leaf.
Toronto is still looking to beef up their defense, and with Luke Schenn headed to Winnipeg, their options become more and more slim. It is up to Brad Treliving to make the tough decisions, so we will see what comes of it.
