Magic Hitting Threes Leads to Victories
Recently, it was stated that the Orlando Magic needed to do three things each night to win and have a shot at finishing the year with 41 victories or better. One of those items was to score more three-pointers than their opponent. However, on Friday night in their 120-105 win against the Washington Wizards, both sides tied with 17 shots beyond the arc made.
The Magic are 11-2 in games with more than 14 buckets from downtown, losing to only Toronto and Memphis (in games where both Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner were playing).
In a game where they tied with Washington in three-pointers, what made the difference? Having multiple role players with double-digit points. While Banchero and Wagner combined for 51 points (satisfying one of the three things they need to win each night by combining for more than 35), they also had more than two other players with double digits.
All five starters for Orlando had 11 or more points. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, with his seventh game in March with more than nine points, had 11. Point guard Cory Joseph also had 11, playing for a still-injured Cole Anthony, while starting Center Wendell Carter Jr, the team’s third-highest scorer, got 16. Anthony Black was the only player on the Magic’s bench in double digits, recording 13.
However, stopping the hapless and rebuilding Wizards threes times in a season so far is one thing – battling the Los Angeles Lakers as the trendy pick to win the NBA Title in the national media this season with two of the best players in the NBA in LeBron James and Luka Doncic is completely another.
However, when Banchero and Wagner combine for 62 (Wagner had 32), Carter and Black pour in 12 and 17 points, respectively, and Orlando bombs in 15 three-pointers to L.A.’s 10, that’s the winning combo that Orlando needs to supplant even a top NBA opponent.
They head to North Carolina to battle the Charlotte Hornets on Tuesday before returning home to face Doncic’s former team, the Dallas Mavericks, on Thursday.
